5. Valve Clearance Inspection and Adjustment
Need for Maintenance
‘The intake valve and exhaust valve open and close in the appropriate timing for combustion chamber air in-
take and exhaust, Taking into consideration the heat expansion of the valve stem, @ specified clearance is pro-
vided as valve clearance betwoen the valve and the rocker arm when the valve is closed. This clearance changes
over time due to wear of the valve seat surface, etc., so periodic inspection and adjustment is necessary,
IT the valve clearance is out of specification, it can result in insufficient power output, Increased fuel consump-
ton, overheating, black smoke and engine speed irregularity.
Ml Required Tools, Tester, SST
Thickness gauge
Valve clearance inspection and adjustment procedure is almost the same for the 1DZ engine and 2Z engine, The
procedure explained here is for vehicles with the 2Z engine.
HINT:
This operation must be performed with the engine warmed up, so it must be performed quickly before the en-
gine cools down.
(1) Valve Clearance Inspection
41) Chock the wheels and engage the parking brake,
2) Werm up the engine.
‘Standard: Coolant temperature 75 ~ 85°C
3) Disconnect the battery minus terminal
4) Loosen the clamp on the air cleaner outlet hose.
5) Remove the wire harness along the intake pipe.
6) Remove the intake pipe.

7) Remove the cylinder head cover, Ge
8) Rotate the crank pulley in the engine rotation direo-
tion (clockwise) unt cylinder No. 1 or No, 4is at top
dead center (TDC).
Fig. 2-2059) When the crank pulley TOC mark and the pointer are
aligned, use the following method to determine
whether cylinder No. 1 or No. 4 is at TDC.
+ If cylinder No, 1 Is at TDG, there is clearance at
both the IN valve and EX valve of cylinder No. 1.
+ Ifoylinder No. 4 is at TOG, there is clearance at
both the IN valve and EX valve of cylinder No. 4
* IN valve: intake valve / EX valve: exhaust valve
410) When cylinder No. 1 is at TDC, measure the valve
clearance indicated in Fig. 2.207.
Standard clearance (warm engine):
IN 0.18 ~0.22 mm
EX 033~0.37 mm
‘When cylinder No. 4 is at TOC, measure the valve
clearance indicated in Fig. 2-208.
Standard clearance (warm engine):
IN 0.18 ~0.22 mm
EX 033~037 mm
NOTICE:
When you insert the thickness gauge into the
clearance, the sliding pressure must be the same
‘each time, neither too light or too heavy.

(2) Valve Clearance Adjustment
Ifthe valve clearance is not within specification, adjust
the clearance using the following procedure.
4) Using an offset wrench, loosen the lock nut.
2) Turn the adjustment screw with a flat-bladed sorew.
driver to adjust the clearance.
REFERENCE:
Adjustment is easy if you use @ flat-bleded screw-
driver with a blade thickness that fully occupies the
Width of the groove in the adjusting screw head.

‘Standard clearance (warm engi
IN. 0.20 mm,
EX. 0.36 mm
3) When adjustment is finished, tighten the lock nut.
HIN
‘When you tighten the lock nut, use a flat-bladed
screwdriver to avoid the adjusting screw from turning
together with the lock nut as you tighten the lock nut.
Tightening torque:
10.6 ~ 29.4 Nem (2.00 ~ 3.00 kgm) | ]
4) After you tighten the lock nut, inspect the valve
clearence again
Fig. 2211
'5) Rotate the crank shaft 380°, then measure and adjust the clearance of the remaining valves.
HINT:
After adjustment, be sure to measure the clearance of all the valves.
6) Install the cylinder head cover.
Tightening torque: 4.9 ~ 8.8 N-m (0.50 ~ 0.90 kgm)
NOTICE:
Avoid overtightening. It will impair the effectiveness of the seal washer,
7) Install the intake pipe.
Tightening torque: 14.5 ~ 21.8 Nim (1.48 ~ 2.22 kgm)
8) Install the clamp to the wire harness along the intake pipe.
9) Install the intake pipe to the air cleaner outlet hose and clamp them together.
410) Connect the battery negative terminal.
