Assembly Instructions
- Insert O-Ring (Item 10) into groove on Bottom Sub (Item 03). Thread the Bottom Sub into
the Main Body (Item 01) & install Grub Screw (Item 07).
- Fit the Coil Spring (Item 04) into bore of Main Body. Warning:- Use caution when working
with Spring as it stores a lot of energy in the compressed state.
- Insert O-Ring (Item 09) into the Piston (Item 02) and slide the Piston into Main Body.
- Thread Pinning Tool Body into box thread of Surge Tool Main Body.
Wind the Rod down (compressing the Coil Spring) until the groove on the Piston lines
up with the Shear Screw holes. Insert required amount of Shear Screws (Item 06).
- When the force from the Coil Spring is retained correctly by the Shear Screws the Rod should be
threaded back through the Pinning Tool Body very easily. If there is still force on the Rod then
check that the Shear Screws are installed correctly in the groove on the Piston.
- Carefully remove the Pinning Tool from the box thread of the Surge Tool Main Body.
- Insert O-Ring (Item 08) into Groove on The Top Sub (Item 05) and Thread The Top Sub into
box thread of the Surge Tool Main Body (Item 01).
- The Tool is now ready to be assembled to the Lock/Equalising Assembly it is to be run with.
Install Grub Screw (Item 07) if required.
Disassembly Instructions
Warning:- The Coil Spring, even after shear out of Screws, retains considerable force and hence
great care should be taken at all times.
- Remove Surge Tool from Lock/Equalising Assembly. With extreme caution, Remove Top Sub
From Main Body. This will allow the Coil Spring to release residual stored energy.
- On disassembly inspect all parts for damage (especially O-Ring seals) and replace where
necessary.

The Formation Surge Tool should be assembled to the relevant Lock / Equalising Assembly.
This Assembly may then be run into the well bore in the normal manner and the device located
in the relevant Nipple, after which the Running Tool should be retrieved prior to utilising the
Formation Surge Tool.
The Formation Surge Tool is designed to allow a drawdown to be created across the
perforations in order to remove debris.
By increasing the well pressure below the Surge Tool and then depressurising above, a pressure
differential is created which will shear the pins in the tool at their given rating. The Piston
will then be moved upwards by the Spring, thus exposing the flow ports and allowing
passage through the tool for the formation effluent.
After the well pressure has stabilised the Lock mechanism and Formation Surge Tool may be
retrieved by conventional wireline methods.
Caution: If,- For any Reason- The Shear Pins Has to be Removed And Re-Installed After
Assembly, Make Sure That The Pinning Tool is Threaded into The Main Body
Of Surge Tool, and Wind the Rod down until it touches the Piston, to Contain the
Spring Force.

SHEAR SCREW VALUES FOR 2.75" SURGE TOOL
Each Shear Screw BB-300 is rated to approx 200 psi. Each Shear Screw BB-250 is rated to
approx 150 psi. Shown below are examples of calculated ratings for various configurations of
each shear screw.
