Develop Your Conflict Resolution Skills.

Conflict arises when two parties tend to disagree or there is no clear-cut communication between

the two. Managing conflict especially in the workplace is vital in creating and fostering a good

working environment for employees.

Given the example of Sally and David, the two appropriate methods to resolve the conflict would

be accommodation and compromise.

In accommodation, one of the parties gets to give in or is persuaded to give in to suit the other

person’s needs. According to the scenario, Sally gets to work early and does not give David

enough time to clear up his desk.

Also, Sally gets to take up much of the space putting up photos of her family whereas it is

supposed to be a shared workspace. Sally should practice being accommodating and share the

workspace with David.

A second conflict management style would be the use of compromise. Compromise attempts to

find a solution that will partially go in favor of both parties (Aysraf 2014). With compromise,

Sally would have to arrive at work as expected or either David leaves early to give time to Sally.

Also, Sally would have to give up half of the workspace and share it with David. This might

require separating the desk drawer to have separate portions for the two or having an additional

desk drawer.

Given the above, the most suitable conflict management style would be compromised. This is

because it provides a win-win situation for both parties and neither of them would still feel

aggrieved.
