The Influence Of The Assignment By Watching Films In The Process Of Adding
Vocabulary

A. Research Background
For students, parents and teachers, homework is often a controversial
issue. If used properly, assignment can be a valuable tool for enhancing
classroom learning. Unfortunately, many teachers cannot make effective use
of assignment Teachers can use research-tested strategies and adaptation
measures to increase the utilization of assignment (McNary, Glasgow and &
Hicks, 2005). However, for teachers with limited time, it can be a challenge
to find time to read research, understand its meaning and then apply it. The
purpose of this article is to provide a summary of assignment research,
outline the elements of effective assignment, and provide practical
suggestions for classroom applications.

For an English speaker, having a good vocabulary is one of the most

important things. Without sufficient vocabulary, it is difficult for anyone to
use the four language skills, namely listening, speaking, reading and
writing. According to McCarthy (1990), no matter how well students learn
grammar and how successful they are in imitating their language sounds, it
is impossible to have meaningful communication without words to express
broader meaning. Wahyuningsih (2018) also pointed out that exposure to
limited English vocabulary is one of the problems that lead to poor students’
writing skills

Film are used in real environments and cultural environments where

foreign languages are spoken, allowing students to come into contact with
languages in real life. According to the research of Kusumarasdyati (2004)
and Luo (2004), film also arouse the interest of learners and can increase
their learning motivation. Ward & Lepeintre (1996) further elaborated that
film can inspire the teaching process of EFL/ESL, because film provides a
story that needs to be told, not a story that needs to be told.
