Introduction
Hi Sew lover.

My name is Quincy and I‟ll be taking you on this tutorial. Thank you so much for viewing/downloading
this tutorial. This tutorial is for Beginners/Intermediates.

We all know a pattern is more like a template from which the parts of a garment are traced on to
fabric before being cut and assembled. Patterns are usually made of paper and are sometimes made
of sturdier materials like paperboard or cardboard if they need to be more robust to withstand
repeated use. (Read more about Patterns, here)

Personally, I see making patterns as rough work, to ensure we do not make mistakes while cutting
out what we want on our fabrics. I am sure you wouldn‟t want to trace your design on your fabric only
to realize you‟ve made a mistake, thus wasting your fabric. Believe me, you wouldn‟t want that,
especially if it is a client‟s fabric.

So on this tutorial, I‟ll be showing you how to make a Letterman/Varsity/Bomber jacket pattern which
is a prerequisite of HOW TO SEW A LETTERMAN/VARISTY/BOMBER JACKET. See other pattern-
making tutorials, here

What is a Varsity Jacket?

A Varsity jacket, also popularly known as bomber jacket for females, or letterman jacket for males, is
a jacket traditionally worn by high school and college students in the United States to represent
school and team pride, as well as to display personal awards earned in athletics, academics or
activities.

This jacket is usually made of boiled wool and the sleeves of leather with banded wrists and
waistband. But these days, they can be made of literally anything...including but not limited to Ankara.
See more here.

Requirement:
1. Super wide Pattern Paper: Six super wide pattern papers and these could be newspaper,
cardboard or scrap fabrics.
2. Already made blouse: This will serve as reference
3. Pen/pencil/marker
4. Measuring tape and ruler
5. Tracing wheel

Procedures:
To make a Varsity jacket pattern, you‟ll begin by (a) Making the front pieces, (b) Making the back
piece (c) Inserting pocket holes (d) Making the sleeves and other preliminaries

a. Making the front pieces: To make the front piece of the bodice, fold your pattern paper
into equal halves, and then place the front of your already-made blouse (which should already
be folded into equal halves), on the folded area of your pattern paper. Trace the sides of your
already made blouse an inch away on your pattern paper. The 1 inch is to accommodate for
seam allowance.

When done, remove your already-made and your front piece (still folded in equal halves) will
look like this:

When you open it up, it will look like this:

Unfortunately we cannot use the front piece the way it is because it does not include any
allowance for either a zipper or snaps. Thus to rectify this, fold a bigger pattern paper into
equal halves and then, place your front piece (which should already be folded back into
halves) on that pattern paper.

From the neckline, measure 2 or 2.5” inches and mark.

From the new mark made, draw a vertical line which will serve as your new folded area.

When you open your new front piece it will look like this.

Cut through the folded area to create two pieces

b. Making the back piece: To make the back pieces, fold your second paper pattern into equal
halves. Place the back of your already made blouse (which should already be folded into equal
halves) and trace all its sides 1 inch away from your already made blouse on your pattern
paper.

When done, remove your already made blouse and your back piece (still folded in equal
halves) will look like this:

c. Inserting pockets (optional): You can choose to insert pockets to your pattern or not. To
insert pockets, simply fold back your front pieces into equal halves and mark out the various
body dimensions: Bust/Chest, Body/Waist and abdomen.

From the waist, at the folded area, measure 4.5” and mark. This value is gotten by dividing the
body/waist by 8 inches.

Then from the new mark, draw a slant vertical line of about 7.5” and mark.

With your tracing wheel, trace this line to the other side of your front piece.

When done, your front pieces (still folded in equal halves) will look like this:

When you open them up, they will look like these

d. Making the sleeves and other preliminaries: See how to make a sleeve pattern here.

16

The length of your sleeve should be „Sleeve length minus 5 inches’. That is, if your sleeve
length measurement for instance is 21 inches, remove 5 inches. It will this make the full length
of your sleeve from shoulder to wrist 16 inches.

The wristband of your jacket should make up for the 5 inches. So cut out a wristband of about
5 inches wide and „round curve‟ long.

Both your sleeves and your wristband must be 2 pieces each.

The collar of your varsity jacket is usually just a collar stand. It does not include a collar leaf.
Therefore click here to see how to make a collar stand

As for the waistband, cut out another piece of pattern paper of “Length of waist X 5 inches
wide”
