HOSPITAL ATTACHMENT REPORT

REPORT ON SUPERVISED HOSPITAL ATTACHMENT


AT MURANG’A COUNTY REFFERAL HOSPITAL.

In the periods of 12 weeks we were able to do the following;

1. Communication skills which was key in surgical history taking which involved:
 Introduction of oneself
 Creating rapport.
 History taking
 Summarizing.
2. Performed examination of orthopedic and trauma patients general examination.

Vital signs

Local examination.

3. Performed specified orthopedic nursing ;


Wound dressing
Wound cleaning
4. Closed reduction of dislocations;
 Hip dislocation
 Elbow dislocation
 Shoulder dislocation
 Ankle dislocation.
5. Closed featured reduction
6. Cast application on lower and upper limbs
7. Cast removal on lower and upper limbs.
8. Stain traction application and removal.
9. Theatre procedure;
 Aseptic technique
 Tourniquet application
 Patient positioning
10. Splint application
11. Bandage and braces application.
12. Management of orthopedic deformity.
13. Rotate in radiology and imaging department whereby we were able to observe and identify
orthopedic and trauma conditions on radiographs and images.
14. Rotate in orthopedic technology, physiotherapy and occupational therapy departments whereby
we were able to observe and assist in offering rehabilitation services.
CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED

In the period of clinical placement in Murang’a level 5 we encountered the following challenges;

1. Lack of skeletal traction procedures.


2. Lack of adequate radiographs
3. Lack of materials i.e. plaster bandages.

RECOMMENDATION AND CONCLUSION.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion we benefited a lot in the field attachment because we managed to apply the knowledge from
the college into practice by the help of our supervisors and we learnt new things.

RECOMMENDATION.

To the department , the management of orthopedic and trauma should make arrangements to enhance
skeletal traction services provided

To college, the college should continue with attachment program and should send students to Murang’a
level 5 hospital for the orthopedic departments is long supportive and the staff there are willing to guide
students
