Introduction This document supersedes SSG 5545E. The document gives recommendations for splicing
beams for overhead travelling cranes and hoist blocks.
1 Construction
1.1 General Swedish Regulations for Welded Steel Structures St BK - N2 shall be complied with as
applicable regarding materials, design and inspection.
1.11 Splice positions The splice positions which are most appropiate from the standpoint of loading in continuous
beams on several supports or suspension points are shown in the figure below.

1.2 Splicing of IPE, The stages of construction set out below shall be carried out in an unbroken sequence.
HEA (≤40) and It is of particular importance that the pause between stages d and e is so short that the web
HEB (≤30) sections and flange welds are if possible finished at the same time.

Section A - A
a) Any clamping devices for the web and flanges are mounted. Welding commences with
a few runs at welds 1 and 3.
b) Weld 2 is deposited to one half of its volume. Weld 1 and 3 are deposited to one
third of their volumes, if possible simultaneously with the welding of 2.
c) Welds 1, 2 and 3 are cut out on the root side.
d) The root side of weld 2 is finished to its full volume, and another one third of welds 1
and 3 is deposited.
e) Welds 1, 2 and 3 are completed, 1 and 3 being given sealing runs on the root side.
