Recommendations for use

1. Handling & Storage:

• Please inspect the product immediately upon receipt.
• Use clean, dry gloves in order to prevent surface contamination.
• Equipment used in the handling of the goods must be clean. The contact
surface must be smooth without any bumps in order to prevent damage to
the coated layer. Special care must be made to prevent coil from rolling
when put on the floor.

• The product must remain dry during transportation. Storage must take place inside a structure insu-
lated from surrounding environment Proper ventilation must be provided
in case the product is stored high temperature, high humidity conditions.
• Sheet must be stored on a slant for the effective discharge of humidity
that may occur.
• To prevent discoloration if the coil becomes wet, they must either be
produced immediately or be unwound to dry.

2. Mechanical Jointing and Welding:

• Material with weather resistance equal to that of S
Galum must be selected for mechanical welding and
metallurgic welding. In comparison with the welder
tool tip of other coated steel sheet whose life span
tends to decrease, welding S Galum can minimize
such problems by modifying the tip shape of the
coolant.
• S Galum must avoid contact with lead, bronze or
graphite. Contact with such materials can result in
red rust. Water falling from bronze sheet to S Galum
sheet will accelerate local corrosion.
• Similar to aluminium coated steel sheet, soldering S
Galum is difficult due to the aluminium oxide film on
the surface. Use the aluminium steel sheet soldering
and torch.
• Avoid using neutral silicon rubber sealant containing
amino acid and acetic acid, which can accelerate
corrosion at the beginning of the drying process.

Recommendations for use

3. Painting:
• The surface must be clean, dry and free of scale. Grease and oil
can be removed with a neutral solvent or paint thinner. Use a wire
brush to remove corrosion and by-products.

• The use of Alkid or 100% acryl paint will yield satisfactory results.
However, avoid mixing paint produced by different companies.

4. Use for livestock houses:

• S Galum that has not undergone post-treatment should not be used in building barns. The discharge
and by-products from animals expose S Galum to a highly corrosive environment, accelerating cor-
rosion even when proper sealing and ventilation facilities are installed.

5. Alkali corrosion:
• Due to the properties similar to those of aluminium coated steel sheet, discoloration is likely to occur
if S Galum comes into contact with alkali material. Precautions must be taken.

6. Forming:
• Although the aluminium/zinc coated layer possesses the same properties as lubrication oil, addi-
tional lubrication oil is desirable for satisfactory formability (S Galum with organic film excepted).

• During the forming process, S Galum tends to experience the pick-up phenomenon more often that
galvanized steel sheet. An appropriate amount of lubrication oil can prevent these occurrences.
Avoid using solvent lubrication oil if S Galum is not completely dry before storage. Completely re-
move all steel powder, Fe fines, scraps and chips to prevent red rust from developing.

Aluminized Steel Type 2

Specification: Aluminized Steel Type 2 according to ASTM A 463/A 463M - 97 T2 300.
T2: means commercially pure aluminium
300 means coating weight total both sides 300 g/m2

Aluminized Steel Type 2 was developed in 1939 for superior environmental corrosion
resistance. Type 2 combines the strength of a steel substrate with the corrosion
resistance of aluminium.

Production-method: Hot-dip coating process

MANUFACTURING:
Aluminized Steel Type 2 is produced by continuous hot-dip coating of steel strip in a bath of molten,
commercially pure aluminium. Cleaning the strip in a non-oxidizing / reducing furnace atmosphere
assures a pristine surface for coating adherence. Interaction of molten aluminium with the steel sur-
face produces a metallurgical bond and provides corrosion protection. Line speed, bath temperature
and air finishing knives control aluminium coating thickness.

COATING MICROSTRUCTURE:

The Aluminized Steel Type 2 coating micro-

structure is a duplex one, there being an alu-
minium layer and an underlying, hard alumin-
ium-iron intermetallic alloy layer. The alloy
arises from interaction of molten, commer-
cially pure aluminium with the steel surface
and is the agent that bonds the total coating to
the substrate. The alloy is an essential part of
the coating protection system, supplementing
the aluminium layer and providing a second
line of defense to ensure long term durability.
Control of the alloy layer thickness and thick-
ness uniformity assures the degree of coating
formability necessary for corrugated steel pipe
manufacture.

Aluminized Steel Type 2

BASIC COATING CORROSSION BEHAVIOUR:
Coating Corrosion Resistance: The aluminium
layer spontaneously forms an aluminium oxide pas-
sive film, as is characteristic of aluminium. This film
imparts its usual high resistance to major environ-
mental factors influencing corrosion behavior in
waters and soils. Corrosion due to dissolved oxy-
gen and carbon dioxide and erosion corrosion due
to high velocity waters are the common influential
factors in a pipe waterside environment. The pas-
sive film imparts high resistance to all of these fac-
tors.

Any pitting in the aluminium layer will be arrested at

the thick alloy layer. At the alloy layer, pits grow in
width rather than in depth. The aluminium layer
may exhibit abrasion losses in high velocity rainfall
run-off carrying bedload but the alloy layer provides
enhanced resistance to mild-to-moderate abrasion.
The alloy layer also resists erosion corrosion and
corrosion by water and soil, thus providing effective
long-term protection.

As a consequence of its combined coating properties, Aluminized Steel Type 2 achieves a superior
service life over the full range of normal exposure conditions common to drainage pipe environments.
Exceptions include severe abrasive conditions and severe corrosive conditions such as exist in sea-
water, acid minewater and sanitary sewage..

Coating Protection Mechanism of the Steel Substrate: The very slow rate of pit growth observed
in field surveys of pipe up to 43 years old is due to the galvanic protection mechanism of Aluminized
Steel Type 2. Should pits penetrate into the steel substrate, three combined pit growth-restricting
electrochemical factors are activated.
* Low-level (partial) galvanic protection of the pit cavity is provided by corrosion of the sur-
rounding aluminum layer.
* The electrically insulating oxide films on the aluminium and alloy layers hinder the electro
chemical action that powers pitting.
* Partial galvanic protection produces adherent corrosion products that plug pit cavities and
retard corrosion.
All there electrochemical factors provide effective long-term substrate protection throughout the entire
pipe service life.

Applications: *Hot-, cold- and sound- insulation cladding.

* Drainage pipes.
* Roofing and siding for buildings.

Glass Cloth

Material:
Glass yarn are manufactured with continuous filament, low alkali, “E”
glass yarn and are woven on high technology shuttle-less looms
coated with crylic acid copolymer liquid, to set the weave that gives the
fabric good dimensional stability.

Advantages:
Glass is an inherently inert substance. It does not rot; it does not de-
cay; it does not absorb moisture as, for example, do natural fibers such
as cotton or Hessian. It will also not leach out volatile solvent oil from
the medium it is reinforcing. It is unaffected by microorganisms, or by
the effects of elements. Glass fiber has a high tensile strength and will
not stretch, thus significantly improving the life of the protective coating
by giving a much higher resistance to cracking than an un-reinforced
product.

Specifications:
Glass yarn meet or exceed the values of product standard PS127/1986 issued by BRoCMA (Bitumen
Roof Coatings Manufactures Association).

Application:
It is commonly used in wall reinforce, out-side wall heat insulation, roof waterproof, etc., is an ideal
engineering material in insulation system and construction.

Expansion Spring

Expansion (Breather) Spring is designed to secure

insulation over large diameter insulated piping, tanks,
vessels, and equipment subject to expansion and
contraction. They also can be used with any common
width of strapping up to 50mm

Expansion Springs are available in Stainless Steel

type 302, 304 & 316.

Available length 50mm (2”), 100mm (4”)

Expansion Springs are simply attached to strapping
with stainless steel wing seals. The strapping is
slipped through the seal and then through the spaced
opening at either end of the spring. The strapping is
then bent back and the wings of the seal are flat-
tened. Strapping is then extended completely around the insulated object, or to the next spring, and
the same routine is repeated until the entire circumference has been encircled.

Maximum expansion of the 4" spring should not exceed 2½” beyond its original length; it is recom-
mended that each spring be stretched ½” upon installation. This allows an additional 2" expansion
capability per spring. The number and size of expansion springs to be used should have an expan-
sion capability of at least twice that of the expected expansion of the object. Extreme care should be
taken to assure that stresses are evenly distributed around the insulation.

Compression Spring - Mity Spring

DESCRIPTION - COMPRESSION SPRING

Compression Springs - Mity-Spring are assembled
from components of Type 302 and 304 Stainless
Steel. They are used with strapping to accommodate
expansion and contraction of large diameter insu-
lated and jacketed piping, tanks, vessels, and equip-
ment. Standard Compression Springs provide 80
lbs. /inch of compression, and can be used with
strapping widths up to 3/4". When excessively high
winds are a factor, or compression exceeds 80 lbs. /
inch, Super Compression Springs with 300 lbs. /inch
of compression and mounting plates for 1-1/4" strap-
ping widths are available.

APPLICATION
3/4" x 0.5mm Stainless Steel Strapping is slipped through and back over the slots on one end of the
flat bottom of the spring. Strapping is secured with a 3/4" closed seal. Strapping is extended around
the object, or to the next spring, and the routine is repeated until the entire circumference has been
encircled. (Secure the Super Compression Springs with 1-1/4" x 0.5mm strapping, and 1-1/4" Seals.)

To accommodate expected expansion of the object, the number of Compression Springs to be in-
stalled is based on a maximum compression of 1-1/2" per spring. Install one Compression Springs for
every 25' of strapping. When tensioning the strapping, compress each spring unit a total of 1/2" (1/4"
for each half of the spring unit). Extreme care should be taken to assure that spring compression and
strapping stresses are evenly distributed around the object.

SS 316 Blind Rivets (Pop Rivets)

Blind rivets are mainly used when access to the joint is only available from one side. Blind rivets (pop
rivet) are tubular and are supplied with a mandrel (nail) through the center. The rivet is placed in a
predrilled hole parts which needs to be joined and a specially designed tool is used to draw the man-
drel into the rivet. This expands the blind end of the rivet and the mandrel snaps. A tight joint formed
by the rivet body remains.

Advantage of Blind Rivets :

Blind rivets are used without the need for access at the back of the work. However there
are many additional advantages that make blind rivets the most logical choice in numerous
applications as compared with other fasteners.
• Costs are often lower than those of other fasteners because of their
speed and ease of application.
• Fast assembly, because blind rivets can be set in seconds. Low cost,
lightweight, easily portable tools manual or power tools are easy to take to
the work place, reduce operator fatigue, and minimize capital expenditure.
• Strong, reliable fastenings, independent of operator skill.
• Vibration-proof assembly, blind rivets won't back out or vibrate loose and
fallout like threaded fasteners.
• No dents, dimpling or wrench marks on the surface of usage.
• Blind rivets hold securely in thin or thick, soft or hard materials, ideal for
dissimilar materials. They are first choice for plastics and other easily
damaged components.

TYPICAL FIXING DETAILS
Wall Construction of light weight metal sheeted buildings is frequently uninsulated leading to extremely
uncomfortable working conditions or excessive cooling requirements. Fiberglass Blankets can be fitted
to new and existing buildings to alleviate these problems.
NEW CONSTRUCTION:
Fiberglass Blankets is fixed at the head of the wall and allowed to drape down the length. The insula-
tion roll may be fixed to sheeting rails with the faced side to the inside of the building if no lining sheets
are to be used or alternatively by trapping the insulation between external and internal sheeting. Spacer
Bars of Non compressible material should be used to prevent undue crushing of the insulation.
EXISTING BUILDINGS:
Fiberglass Blankets may be installed from within existing buildings by using a "T" Bar suspension gride
and liner sheets, the insulation can be cut to suit the size of lining sheet and fixed to the back of the
sheet with adhesive or mechanical fasteners. The lining is then installed in the grid system in the nor-
mal manner.
As an alternative to the above timber packing strips may be cut to suit the sheeting rails and screwed in
place, fix the Building Roll at the head of the wall by screws into the timber packer with a steel strip
placed on top of the insulation directly over the packer. Repeat as required at other sheeting rail loca-
tions, ensuring that the Building Roll is closely butted to each other with the edge flanges overlapping.
OVER PURLIN APPLICATION
Fix end of Building Roll faced side down, at ridge and allow unrolling to eaves. At eaves, roll should be
cut and pulled taut. Each subsequent roll should be overlapped or butted to avoid gaps.
Packing strips, equal in thickness to the insulation should be placed along the line of each purlin and
fixed through the roofliner to the purlin below. This avoids undue compression of the insulation.
The roof cladding should be carried out in conjunction with the insulation work to avoid accidental dam-
age. Fixing should be through the crown profile of the roofing sheet and down through the spacer to the
purlin below.
Weathering sheets should be fitted as insulation work progresses in order to avoid unnecessary dam-
age to the insulation. Holes for hook bolts sealed against water penetration.

FIBER GLASS BLANKET

UNDER PURLIN APPLICATION

After application of roof covering the internal lining and insulation can be carried out using a frame-
work of light metal "T" sections suspended from the purlins by straps or hangers.

a) Cut Building Roll to size and lay on lining board. To assist in handling, the insulation may be ad-
hered or stapled to the lining board. Erect lining board and insulation within the metal "T" grid securing
as required.

b) Alternatively the insulation can be applied from rolls initially secured at the ridge and allowed to un-
roll progressively towards the eave in conjunction with the application of lining boards. It is important
that the adjacent layers of insulation are sufficiently overlapped to prevent heat loss or gain.

SANDWICH CONSTRUCTION

Roofs which incorporate double sheeting can be easily insulated with Fiberglass Blankets due to its
flexible nature. After initial fixing of the inner or lining sheeting Fiberglass Blankets should be fitted by
unrolling from ridge to eave, ensure that each subsequent roll overlaps or butts the preceding roll to
eliminate gaps and maintain the effective insulation values desired. Fit spacers in the form of timber
battens or proprietary profiled strips or other compression resistant materials on top of the insulation
directly over the purlins to avoid crushing the insulation when the external weathering sheet is fitted.

DEMOUNTABLE PARTITIONS:

Generally, factory assembled with metal or plasterboard facings. The addition of Fiberglass Blankets
to the partition void reduces the level of sound transmissions.

"A" PURPOSE BUILT LIGHT WEIGHT PARTITIONS

Due to the problems of load and the usual involvement of wet trades, heavy block partitions are com-
monly being replaced by purpose built light weight partitions. With careful design and construction,
these partitions can provide adequate levels of sound transmission reduction.

Partitions should be constructed with as little mechanical linkage as possible, studs should be stag-
gered to avoid direct transmission paths, with the insulation fitted or woven between them.

"B" SOUND ABSORPTION TREATMENT

In areas where sound absorption is required, Fiberglass Blankets can be used to line the walls, behind
a decorative or functional facing which will permit the passage of sound waves to the glass wool be-
hind, thereby reducing the amount of sound reflected back. This type of treatment is commonly used in
open plan offices, auditoriums, sports halls, sound studios, multi-purpose school halls and industrial
areas.

The insulation should be fitted directly against the wall surface, between timber battens. A surface
treatment of perforated hard board or sheet metal can be fixed to the timber battens. The area of per-
foration should be no less than 10% for most common treatments, though a 33% perforation is prefer-
able, as this gives an optimum amount of absorption. Should a more decorative treatment be required,
a good quality curtain grade hessian, or other decorative fabric can be applied.

Aluminum Roll Jacketing
Description:
Aluminum Roll Jacketing is manufactured from alloys 3105 and 3003, conforming to ASTM B-209
designation, semi-hard temper (H-14) and heavier gauges quarter-hard (H-12 lock-forming quality).
Commercially pure aluminum is relatively soft as structural material. Its strength can be greatly im-
proved by alloying aluminum with small percentages of one or more other elements such as manga-
nese, silicon, copper, magnesium or zinc. Additional strength can be achieved by cold working, such
as cold rolling.

Midland Lead Soundproofing

Industrial applica-
tions

Midland Lead has been established since 1983 and produces over 20,000
tonnes of lead sheet per annum. Whilst the majority of this production is des-
tined for roofing and cladding work, demand for lead sheet as a soundproof-
ing material is growing.

As a result of both stricter government legislation and the corporate need to

eliminate unwanted noise, there is a growing interest in sound insulation in
homes, offices, hotels and industrial plants. In addition, since modern con-
struction methods are making buildings lighter, they become more suscepti-
ble to the transmission of sound. Walls that were previously brick and block
load bearers - and good sound absorbers - are now little more than noise
sensitive plasterboard screens.

One way of interrupting sound, is through the construction of a noise control

barrier. Lead sheet can be used as such an excellent barrier. It has enough
weight; it is a dense yet flexible material with a low resonant frequency to
stop noise.

Midland Lead provides the perfect lead sheet to meet these soundproofing
needs.

Midland Lead Soundproofing

Noise pollution, whether in the office, at home, or in the factory, is a serious
health problem. Research has shown that only a 5 decibel (dB) reduction in
noise levels can half the risk of hearing loss. The use of lead sheet as a
noise barrier is one of the best solutions to diminish this risk and eliminate
unwanted noise.

In the example below a ceiling board has been tested for its sound reduction
properties using 0.45 mm lead sheet. The results clearly show the noise re-
duction benefits that can be obtained when installing lead sheet, in fact noise

Midland Lead Soundproofing

Lead sheet is an excellent noise control barrier. Its sound reduction proper-
ties were first discovered in the 1930s, although it was several decades later
before it was commercially produced for this purpose. The applications of our
products are endless - soundproof generator enclosures, home applications
between floor levels and rooms, acoustic insulation for machinery, pool pump
room soundproofing and any place where there are excessive sound levels -
while the reward is peace of sound. Moreover, our acoustic lead sheet can
be easily shaped and used as a noise control barrier in walls, ceilings, floors
or doors.

Diag.3 Typical Decibel Noise Levels

There are many ways to interrupt sound, but none is as cost-effective as the
use of lead sheet. This is mainly due to the high density of lead sheet and its
non porous characteristic. Furthermore, lead is thinner and easier to work
with than other rigid polymeric barrier materials in the same acoustic class.
Handling lead sheet is straightforward because it is a flexible material, it is
clean and grease free and requires no preparation prior to applying adhe-
sives. In addition, it is easy to install; it can be cut by knife or scissors and
can be taped or bonded to other materials.

Lead sheet advantages

• Provides a cost-effective sound barrier solution

• Is flexible and easy cut
• Needs no preparation prior to installment
• Is ready available in standard roll sizes

Midland Lead Soundproofing

The ability of a wall or roof to reduce the amount of sound transmitted
through it is measured using the sound transmission loss classifications. Ma-
terials are rated on their ability to block sound, using the sound transmission
classification system (STC). The higher the STC, the better the sound reduc-
tion properties of the material tested.

Materials used for soundproofing, such as loaded vinyl, plywood and lead act
in different ways. Porous materials absorb sound and allow it to pass through
at a slightly reduced intensity. Non porous material like lead sheet blocks the
sound all together, lead surpasses any other material as a noise control bar-
rier.

awkward shapes

Both diagrams shown here reveal the sound transmission loss of lead sheet
is superior in comparison to other materials. It can clearly be seen that lead
sheet is a far better product than plywood or loaded vinyl when used as a
sound control barrier. The more extreme the application the better lead sheet
performs.
