Standard Installation Instructions 
 

1)  To facilitate installation, Koch‐Glitsch provides: 
► Installation drawings 
► Shipping list of pieces 
► Additional instructions below 
 

2)  Protect all parts and hardware items from damage and loss (especially loose hardware items) while storing prior to 
installation.  
► Pieces should be left in the crates or containers until they are installed.  
► Do not stack movable Valve Tray sections face to face because the movable valves will interlace and the tray 
sections cannot be separated.  
► Improper handling can damage equipment sections. Do not apply enough force to cause damage. 
► To avoid lacerations, do not handle sheared metal parts without gloves or other personal protection equipment 
(PPE). 
 

3)  Carefully study the installation drawings and assembly details along with the packing list. Read all notes pertaining 
to installation including items that are particularly important to the proper operation of the equipment, such as: 
► Weir heights 
► Downcomer clearance settings 
► Distributor leveling 
► Other items that require special attention 
 

4)  If possible, make a trial setup outside the vessel. The trial setup will: 
► Allow the installer to coordinate the various pieces of equipment with the drawings. 
► Familiarize workers with the general layout of the equipment and specific hardware locations. 
 

5)  All tower attachments (support rings, bolt bars, clamp bars, beam support, etc.) must be accurately identified, located 
(level and/or plumb) parallel to indicated centerlines and welded to tower shell. 
► Tower attachment must be free of weld splatter and otherwise clean.  
► Tray pieces/internals must not be installed on damaged, improperly positioned, or unclean attachments. 
 

6)  CAUTION: Unless specified otherwise, equipment is designed for a concentrated maintenance load of 250 lbs.  
(113 kg.) at any one point on the tray integral‐flanges or beams when securely installed.  
► If additional men or equipment will be loaded onto tray or beam, or if trays or beams are in a corroded condition, 
temporary supports and/or scaffolding should be used.  
► It is recommended that plywood be used by installer at all times when stepping onto surface of trays. The weight 
limit listed above can be used to make a decision when plywood must be used. Use of plywood will reduce 
possible deflection or damage to equipment surface or tray valves. IMPORTANT: Never step on ULTRA‐FRAC® 
activators or SUPERFRAC® truncated downcomer floor plates.  
 

7)  Downcomer and beams should be the first pieces installed.  
► Position these parts according to the drawings. 
► Level and secure these parts by tightening all bolts before loading with tray pieces or other members. This will 
prevent slipping when load is applied.

8)  Inspect all trays before installing. 
 
9)  As the tray sections are positioned, allow for fit‐up of the tray manway panel, but do not install these panels until all 
trays are inspected.  
► Tray panels should be lapped over support rings and beams evenly (see drawings) with allowance for any vessel 
out‐of‐roundness.  
► Butt all plates together before tightening bolts on other plates. 
► Make sure manway panels on adjacent trays are in line. For example: Top manways in line with each other from 
tray to tray in a given section. 
 
10)  In general, it is recommended that all bolts or nuts be lubricated before installing, whether using power or hand 
wrenches. This speeds up installation and helps prevent thread galling.  
► The proper combination of hardware units must be used (see assembly pictures). 
► Domed washers must be positioned to compress the dome when torquing the bolt. Do not exceed the 
recommended torque for tightness as shown in attached table. 
 
11)  Carefully review the drawings for the style, material and application of gasketing that may be required for tray 
component installation. NOTE: Gasket material selection is the customer’s responsibility. If the gaskets are part of the 
Koch‐Glitsch scope of supply, they will be included in the shipment of trays and components. Otherwise, the 
customer/installer is responsible for the supply of gaskets. 
 
12)  All significant openings under downcomers and down‐stream of swept back weir or transitional seal pan weir must 
be closed. Openings occurring at periphery of tray panels where washers are installed over slotted holes will not 
interfere with tray operation. 
 
13)  When installation is complete, care should be taken to remove all loose hardware and other foreign matter.  
► Inspect each completed tray.  
► Check to be sure that all parts are secure and that all fasteners have been tightened.  
► NOTE: If trays were shop installed (this is not recommended without appropriate horizontal installation tray 
technology), they should be re‐inspected in the field following vessel erection to ensure: 
a) Equipment has not been damaged. 
b) Bolts are tight. 
c) Tray panels have not shifted. 
d) Manways are in place. 
 
14)  If equipment is installed before hydrostatic test: 
► Towers with carbon steel equipment should be drained and force‐dried after hydrostatic test. 
► Towers must be maintained in a dry condition until startup. 
 
15)  Parts supplied in sheet and/or strip multiples are attached to the sheet and/or each other with retaining tabs. 
► Do not remove the parts from the sheet or strip until needed for actual installation.  
► When a part is needed for installation, remove the tabs completely from the part. 
► The small attachment tabs must be kept out of the column.
