Q.1) Attempt any FIVE of the following. 10 Marks
a) State any four applications of a cotter joint.
b) State different materials used for shaft.
c) Define stress and state its formula and unit.

e) State any four applications of lever.
f) State torsion equation for solid shaft.

a) Define factor of safety and state it’s significance.
b) State different types of welded joints and sketch it.

a) Write flexural formula and state meaning of each term used in it.
b) A solid circular shaft of 50 mm diameter is transmitting power 50 kW at 200 rpm. Find
the torsional strength of the shaft.
c) Explain various types of stresses develop in the power screw and write their strength
equation.
d) Explain any four aesthetic considerations in design by giving suitable example.
e) State any four desirable properties for a good spring material.

Q.4) Attempt any Three of the following. 12 Marks


a) A cylindrical pipe of external dimeter 100 mm and thickness 20 mm is subjected to an
axial pull of 80 kN, calculate stress induced in the shaft.
b) Design a knuckle joint to transmit 150 KN. The design stresses may be taken as 75 MPa
in tension, 60 MPa in shear and 150 MPa in compression.
c) Define following terms with reference to compression spring:
a) Solid length
b) Free length
c) Spring index
d) Spring rate (Spring stiffness)
d) A solid circular shaft of 100 mm diameter is transmitting power 100 kW at 150 rpm.
Find the intensity of the induced shear stress in the shaft.
e) Explain different forms of threads with their relative advantages and applications.

Q.5) Attempt any TWO of the following. 12 Marks


a) A solid circular shaft is replaced by a hollow circular shaft of same material to transmit
the same power. If the inside diameter of hollow shaft is 2/3 of outside diameter, find the
saving in material if any, by this replacement.
b) Design a foot brake lever from the following data:
 Length of lever from C.G. of the spindle to the point of application of the load = 1
meter.
 Max. load on the foot plate = 800 N
 Overhang from the nearest bearing = 100 mm
 Permissible tensile and shear stress = 70 MPa.
c) Explain selection procedure of helical compression spring from manufacturer’s
catalogue.

c) Explain selection procedure of linear bearings from manufacturer’s catalogue.
