Timing belt: Renewal interval

Timing gear marking


Cylinder 3 in compression TDC. Control marking "A", check that the big holes in the mounting plate
"B" on the cam pulley are aligned with each other on the inside, mount the locking tool for crank
"C" (VAG 3242), loosen the belt tensioner by turning it back with an 8 mm Allen key, and lock it
with a 2 mm cotter pin. Dismount the belt tensioner pulley and belt. Mount cam pulley locking tool
"D" (VAG T40005) and loosen the cam pulley so that they can only just be moved on cone.
Dismount cam pulley's locking tool "D" and mount the belt. Mount the tool for cam pulley "D" and
insert a 5 mm pin between the belt tensioner element plunger "H" and belt tensioner pulleys fitting
"G". Tension the belt with belt tensioner tool (VAG T40009) and a torque spanner on belt tensioner
pulley "F", to a pretension of 6 Nm and tighten the pulley's retaining nut. Dismount the pin and
turn the belt tensioner fitting to stop against the plunger in the belt tensioner element "H".
Dismount the cotter pin in the belt tensioner element, turn the belt tensioner with an Allen key
until a 7 mm pin can be mounted between belt tensioner element "E" and belt tensioner fitting "G".
Tighten the cam pulley and remove the cam pulley tool "D". Dismount the pin and crank locking
tool "C". Turn the crank 720° and check that a 5 mm pin can be inserted between belt tensioner
element "E" and belt tensioner fitting "G".
