Basic Bootcamp , Lesson 5 - Counting from 100 to 10,000

Chihiro Hey everybody, this is Chihiro and you're listening to

Basic Bootcamp Lesson 5 - Counting from 100 to
10,000
Ryan Thanks for joining us, I'm Ryan and welcome to
EnglishClass101.com where you can learn English in a
fun and fast way!
Chihiro And we're on our last lesson for the Basic Bootcamp
series. Thanks for hanging in there!
Ryan And what are we talking about today?

Ryan In this lesson you'll will learn how to say the price of
certain things
Chihiro This conversation takes place in a store
Ryan The conversation is between a customer and a clerk
Chihiro The speakers will be talking about the price of a good.

A How much is it in total?

B That comes to twelve hundred dollars in total.
1 A
B
Twelve hundred?
Twelve hundred.
A I'll pay by credit card.

Ryan Okay, that was a pricey purchase!

Chihiro Now before we talk about the price in the dialogue,
let's talk about something a little less pricey. When
talking about the price of something, it's common to
say the dollar value separate from the cent value. In
other words, let's say a t-shirt that costs $15.75 can be
said as fifteen seventy-five without saying the cent or
the dollar.
Ryan This is a common way to say the price of something,
especially for cashiers. So be ready for it when you
buy something.
Chihiro Let's talk about the amount in the dialogue after the

Ryan We may have mentioned before that English

numbers are relatively easy to say. Use the commas
as markers to indicate the name of the unit. In other
words, if you have a number like 32,945, you say
"thirty-two"; add the unit name, which is "thousand"
in this case; and then say the rest of the number, "nine
hundred forty-five." It sounds like "thirty two
thousand, nine hundred forty-five."

Chihiro Sometimes we read numbers differently just because

it's easier to say them. In the dialogue, the speaker
said the number as "twelve hundred." This number is
actually 1,200. The speaker has moved the comma
himself to the second zero. This is a common reading
for money.
Ryan Be aware that some speakers will add the word "and"
between some numbers. For example, some people
may pronounce the number 934,743 as "nine hundred
and thirty-four thousand, seven hundred and
forty-three."
Chihiro You can also read numbers with a 1 in front as
beginning with "one" or "a." For example, we can
read 100 as "one hundred" or as "a hundred."
Ryan Okay, we hope that cleared some confusion up for
you.

Chihiro Let's continue with numbers in this lesson, but onto

more challenging numbers for those who were
waiting for it!
Ryan We'll say the number separately first so that it's
easier to understand. But remember to follow the
lesson notes as it'll make things easier. Chihiro, give
us the first couple of high numbers.
3 Chihiro Let's start with 100 which is "one hundred" or "a
hundred"
Ryan 110 is "one hundred ten"
Chihiro 199 is "one hundred ninety-nine"
Ryan And a larger number, 1,000 is "one thousand"
Chihiro 1,010 is "one thousand ten"
Ryan 1,374 is "one thousand, three hundred seventy-four"
Chihiro 10,000 is "ten thousand"
Ryan Simple as that. Numbers can sometimes be tricky to
catch, so don't be afraid to ask for repetition if you
need it!
Chihiro So you survived our 5 step basic bootcamp series...
congratulations!
