Introduction:
Start Lesson 3 of this module by assessing your knowledge of the different
mathematics concepts previously studied and your skills in performing
mathematical operations. These knowledge and skills will help you in
understanding solving quadratic equations by factoring. As you go through this
lesson, think of this important question: “How does finding solutions of quadratic
equations facilitate solving real-life problems and making decisions?” To find the
answer, perform each activity. If you find any difficulty in answering the
exercises, seek the assistance of your teacher or peers or refer to the modules
you have gone over earlier. You may check your answers with your teacher.

Motivation/Drill:

Make at least five trinomials

DISCUSSION/CONCEPTS:
FACTORING

If the left side of a complete quadratic equation in standard form can be factored into two linear
factors, the roots or solutions of the quadratic equation can be obtained quickly and easily. Recall that
the test for factorability of a trinomial of the form ax 2 +bx +c states that if the discriminant D=b2−4 ac is
a perfect square, then the trinomial is factorable.

For instance, the trinomial x 2−8 x +12, where a = 1, b = - 8, and c = 12 is factorable since

D=b2−4 ac
¿(−8)2−4 (1)( 12)
¿ 64−48
¿ 16∨4 2

is a perfect square.

In fact,
x 2−8 x +12=( x−6)( x−2).

However, the trinomial 2 x2 −13 x +12, where a = 2, b = -13, and c = 12 is not factorable since

¿(−13)2−4 (2)(12)
¿ 169−96
¿ 73
is not a perfect square.

The principle involved in solving quadratic equations by factoring rests on the following property of
real numbers.

Example 1:
x 2−8 x +15=0 Check: Substitute the value of x.
( x−3 ) ( x−5 ) =0 x 2−8 x +15=0
x=3
x−3=0 x−5=0
(3)2−8 (3)+15=0
x=3 x=5 9−24+15=0
−15+15=0
 0=0
x=5
(5)2−8(5)+15=0
25−40+15=0
−15+15=0
 0=0

Both of x=3 and x=5 are the correct answer


ZERO FACTOR PROPERTY

The product AB=0, if A=0 or B=0 or both A and B are equal to zero.

If a given quadratic equation is the form x 2+ bx+ c=0, express the factored form as ( x +m)( x +n) and
then use the Vieta’s formula, that is, to find two numbers m and n whose sum is b and whose product
is c.

In symbols,
x 2+ bx+ c=(x +m)( x+ n)
where m+n=b and mn=c.

Example 1.

Solve the equation x 2+ 12=7 x

Solution
First, rewrite the given quation in standard form. Then, apply the Vieta’s formula rule.

x 2+ 12=7 x

x 2−7 x+ 12=0

The values of m and n such that m+n=−7 and mn=12 are −3 and −4.

Thus,
x 2−7 x+ 12=( x −3)( x−4)
Example 1:

x 2−7 x+ 12=0
( x−3 ) ( x−4 )=0

Applying the Zero Factor property, x 2+ 12=7 x

( x−3 ) ( x−4 )=0 implies that x−3=0 and x−4=0

If x−3=0 , then x=3, and if x−4=0 and x=4.

To check: If x 2+ 12=7 x , and x=3, then

32 +12=7 ( 3 )
9+12=21
21=21 True

If x 2+ 12=7 x , and x=4, then


4 2 +12=7 ( 4 )
16+12=28
28=28 True
Hence, the solution are x=3 and x=4
