Activity 1 6.2: The Circulatory System

Blocked Passageway
Objective:
1. Describe what happens when the flow of blood in the body is blocked
2. Infer how the blood flows when affected by coronary heart disease
Science in Action
Procedures:
1. Examine your palm.
2. Grip your wrist tightly with your left hand. Observes what happens
to
your palm.
1. Release your hand. Describe how you feel.
2. Get a partner and prepare the materials needed for the next part of the activity.
3. Carefully punch a whole on the lower portion of each cup using the scissors or other
pointed object. Label the cups A and B using the marker.
4. Insert the straw with a larger diameter into the whole you made in cup A. Insert the
straw with a smaller diameter into the hole in cup B. The cups represent the heart
and the straws represent the blood vessels; specifically, the starw with smaller
diameter represents blood vessels with thickened walls.
5. Seal the wholes with inserted straws with inserted straws with clay to prevent leaks
when you pour water into the cup?
6. Place both cups in the basin. Slowly pour water into both cups at the same time.
Oserve the flow of water.
