PAPER 2
OCTOBER 2000 SESSION 2 hour
This paper is divided into three sections. You must answer four questions in all, one from
each of Sections A, B and C and one form any section.

Section A

1. Describe the contacts between the Dutch and the Khoisan at the Cape before
1800. How far was the way of life of the Khoisan changed by these contacts?

2. Describe the problems that were faced by the working class in the United States
of America (USA) between 1850 and 1981. Were the workers successful in
ending exploitation during this period? Explain your answer.

3. Outline the territorial terms of the Treaty of Versailles of 1919. Were the
Germans justified in condemning the treaty as a whole? Explain your answer.

4. Give an account of the origins and aims of the League of Nations. To what extent
was the League able to preserve peace?

Section B

5. What steps were taken by the white settler government in Kenya to establish
European political and economical supremacy after 1890? In what ways were the
Africans affected by these measures?

6. What were the terms of the Grobler Treaty, Moffat Treaty and Rudd Concession?

How important was the part played by missionaries in the signing of these
treaties?

7. Describe the role played by (a) the peasants and (b) the workers in the liberation
struggle in Zimbabwe (1972 -79). To what extent did external influences affect
the outcome of the war?

8. Trace the developments that have taken place in Zimbabwe form independence
(1980) to 1995 in the following areas: (a) Education and (b) Health.

How far were these developments affected by the Economic Structural


Adjustment Programme (ESAP)?

9. Give an account of the events between February and October 1917 which led to
the seizure of power by the Bolsheviks. How successful were the Bolsheviks in
solving the problems facing Russia between 1918 and 1921?
10. What steps were taken by the Nationalist Party from 1948 to 1961 to develop the
system of Apartheid in South Africa? How effective was opposition to Apartheid
in this period?

11. Outline the economic and political problems faced by the Republic of
Mozambique after independence in 1975. To what extent has the Government
been able to solve these problems?

12. Describe the origins and work of the Commonwealth Group of Nations. Has the
organization helped member states solve their economic problems? Explain your
answer.
