5.3 Connecting the cables

Wiring overview
You will find a wiring overview of the entire Multicluster System in the Technical Description
included in the scope of delivery.
Torques of the connection terminals
When connecting the cables, you must observe the torque of each connecting terminal as
specified in section 10 ”Technical Data” (page 37).

Plexiglas cover as protection against contact

The Multicluster Box is designed with protection against accidental contact. A Plexiglas
cover over the terminals serves as protection against contact.
• Remove the Plexiglas cover before performing any work on the Multicluster Box (see
section 7.2 ”Removing Protection against Contact” (page 33)).
• After performing work on the Multicluster Box, mount the Plexiglas cover again (see
section 7.3 ”Mounting Protection against Contact” (page 33)).

5.3.1 Connecting the generator

You can connect a 3-phase generator to the Multicluster Box. However, you also have the option of
connecting it to the power distribution grid.
The phases L1, L2, and L3 are routed through fuse-switch-disconnectors in the Multicluster Box. The
fuse links are designed for a nominal current of 435 A.
Establish the necessary fuse rating based on the wiring on the cable and the installation conditions,
and then use the appropriate fuse links. The maximum size of fuse links permissible in each case are
factory-installed in the fuse-switch-disconnector.
Output fuse of the generator has an impact on the design of the cable in the PV
plant.
Note that the output fuse of the generator influences the design of the cable in the PV plant
(see section 5.3.3 ”Connecting the PV Plant” (page 23)).
Cable Requirements
• The insulated conductor diameter must be selected based on the rated output power of the
generator.
• If the generator is not equipped with an output fuse, the cable is grounded and secured against
short-circuits.
• For longer cables, an additional fuse box is installed close to the generator.

5.3.2 Connecting Consumer Loads

The phases L1, L2, and L3 are routed through fuse-switch-disconnectors in the Multicluster Box. The
fuses are necessary to protect the outgoing cable from overloads. Note that the currents of the
Sunny Island, the PV plant and the generator may add up. Determine the required fuse size according
to layout type of the cable and installation conditions, and install the appropriate fuse links.
Cable protection
The Multicluster Box does not replace a distributor for the loads. Between the
Multicluster Box and the loads, you must install a distributor with a line circuit breaker to
protect and isolate the loads, as well as a ground fault circuit breaker. Be sure to observe
all standards and directives applicable to the installation site.

Connection procedure
1. Insert the cables in the Multicluster Box (see section 5.2 ”Inserting the cables” (page 18)).
2. Turn the handle on the fuse holder downwards.
3. With both hands, lift the fuse holder up at the
anchorage and pull it out.

5.3.3 Connecting the PV Plant

Cable protection
The Multicluster Box does not replace the PV main distribution. Within the PV main
distribution, you must install the line circuit breaker to protect and isolate the PV inverter,
and, if necessary, a residual current breaker between the Multicluster Box and the PV plant.
Be sure to observe all standards and directives applicable to the installation site.

Connecting other Energy Sources

Instead of the PV plant, you can also connect other energy suppliers (e.g. small wind
turbine systems) to the Multicluster Box.

Installation Guide MC-BOX-36-IA-IEN105010 23

Electrical Connection SMA Solar Technology AG

Cable sizing
In a short-circuit, the short-circuit currents driven by the generator flow through the unprotected cable
between the Multicluster Box and the PV main distributor. If the fuse of the generator is larger than the
fuse in the PV main distributor, you have to size the cable to match the generator fuse.
When planning the protection of cables in case of short-circuits, the PV inverter and Sunny Island
devices may be disregarded, as they have been constructed so as not to pose any danger to cables
in case of short circuits. Overload protection is always guaranteed if the cables connecting to the PV
plant are sized to take at least the feed-in power of the PV plant.
Procedure for connecting the PV plant
1. Insert the cables in the Multicluster Box (see section 5.2 ”Inserting the cables” (page 18)).
2. Connect PE to the grounding bar (see section 5.1.3 ”Grounding bar” (page 18)).
3. Carefully raise the covers of the connection
terminals "=MC-X3 PV-System".

4. Connect L1, L2, and L3 to the "=MC-X3 PV-System"

connection terminals according to the labels.
5. Carefully lower the covers of the connection
terminals "=MC-X3 PV-System".

☑ The PV plant is connected.
