HOW MANY HAVE YOU PRESSED TO DATE? The released 7 tracks of my own and done bits of production on ‘bers peoples stl plus a few remixes. Of my own material Ive probably sold about 40,000 across the tiles as singles. There was a long gap between singles last year because I just didnt have ime to record my own su. WHAT GOT YOU INTO THE SCENE? Well Ive always been a record collector, then afte leaving school and working ina record store | decided to open my own shop (Boogie Times in Romiord) This was in 89 and there was such astong vibe in the area it would have been dificult not to get involved, but it was also about the ime when break beats were stating to get used, so as my fist love is Hip Hop it made it more accepiabl to me HOW DO YOU GET INSPIRATION TO MAKE RECORDS? Your inspiration comes from this gong on around you Like a the moment there's loadsa things pissing me off so | find it ifcut ‘iting happy stuf, and when | made ‘Hardoore wil Never Diet as lke a reaction against the shitty music press atthe time that tryo un the scene down, HAVE YOU EVER EXPERIMENTED WITH ANY OTHER STYLES OF MUSIC? {try to experiment with everything I do, Ive just completed a reggae track (not ragga house) with a friend who's an MC. If probably go on the back ofthe new Q-Bass. Also | produced a couple of demos for Rachel Wallace in a Hip Hop style and | done a techno mix on DJ Rap + Astons Tune. HOW DO YOU SEE THE FUTURE OF DANCE MUSIC? 1 dont keto predict the future and | dont realy mind where it 006 as long as | sil enjoy it stil be involved. HAVE YOU EVER DONE ANY LIVE PAS, IF SO ANY ABROAD? Yeah I've done quite a few PAs including a small club tour of ‘America with the rest of the crew. But really I don't get as much time as | would like because | have to run the label. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE SCENE OUT OF THE U..? The soene abroad is realy strong, Like in America they know so much about the label and the UX. scene is unbelievable, and beak beat is getting really strong in Europe too and a few of the artists on the label go out there for PAS, but like I said I dont get the time. WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE? ‘ve got a track being promoted at the moment under the name ‘Boogie Times Tre’ which is a colaboration myself and Druze. ‘Also | recently co wrote a theme tune to a television series, Id lke todo a Q-Bass mini L soon as wel WHAT PRODUCERS DO YOU RATE? J Hype is aways original, love the shut DJ SS is doin, Mike James my engineer who has worked onal recent project with ime, And my favoutte track from earier this yea i‘ Liv’ - ‘Why, but dont thnk ve heard anything else of thors. ANY SHOUTS? Moving Shadow Crew, Mike James, D'Cruze, Dominate, Hype, Andy C, De Underground Crew, and all the artists and fiends that have helped make Suburban Base a realty. SPARKIN Soft, smokable, non-addictive and useful for chillin’ out, These are amongst the many claims made in favour of the wicked weed. TETRAHYDROCANNABINOLS (Where is that’bloody dictionary?) is the active chemical that gets stoned, gives. you the giggles, the munchies ond that appreciation that music is even better when you're stoned (this depends on your musical taste, if this includes the latest teen sensation, check your sanity levels, YOUVE BEEN ROBBED!) A with all drugs be coreful about how much you use, fiw offen you use and how long youve been using. The more you do, the more chances the problem, brigade have, 10 come round and give you a good ‘sorting out’. Your mood and expectations can affect what you experience. If you are depressed, Stressed out, or nervous be careful. Also if you do a lot or use a lot of strong weed you might experience real problems - *Everybod/s talking about me" etc. Physically draw isn't addictive but psychologically (you know, that grey stuff in your head) some people can miss it when it's not around. The clearest physical harm is the some as smoking tobacco. If you also drop acid be aware that people who do and continue to use the weed have experienced confusion, lack cof concentration, even some paranoia that can happen to some people even when they bin the acid. This might also happen if you use speed, ecstacy or magic mushrooms. Cannabis depredges your central nervous system. This is, responsible forthe relaxed feeling you experience. Now, we all know that premium rocket fuel beer or wine and spirits can olso do this, the main difference is you can get busted and get a criminal record with cannabis, Canngbi#¢an also be @oten. It can take a long time to come on, but eee it does kick init can be real strong. Cannabis comes in blocks fooking like brown slate, liquorice and rubber, or in grass form, looks like herbs or sage with'seed and stalks in it. Some grass is seriously strong. i ¥ooks like lumps of grass stuck together. These are the strongest parts the flower buds. Kport from necking draw, some woys it gives off a smell {joints, hot knives, ect.) which is noticeable. Others might ‘nol notice what itis but they will notice. When it comes down to how long draw can stay in your body, itis quite different to other drugs, It can be detected for weeks after you last used, depending on how much you used, how offen you use, and how long youVe been using, if you need or want help or information we are at:- LIFELINE MANCHESTER 101/103 OLDHAM STREET MANCHESTER M4 LW TELEPHONE: 061 839 2054 MONDAY TO FRIDAY 9.30AM - 5PM. racer Tn DM i HOW DID ITALL START? Just as a laugh relly, we were going out and hearing tunes that ‘we lked so we just bought a few then we started buying others that we werent hearing out and thinking boy this one realy should be geting played. Then we played a couple of ses in ccertain places and it just went on from there really. HOW DID TOP BUZZ ITSELF START? Patrick was originally a DJ and there was 3 of us butt just ‘wasnt working, Pat knew the mic was his cause he wasnt too fluent onthe decks WAS YOU WORKING SEPARATELY BEFORE TOP BUZZ WAS FORMED? ‘No ll three of us started together (and there wasnt a forth either). WHAT WAS YOUR ORIGINAL AIM WHEN YOU FIRST STARTED? The main ambition was to play at a big rave, that was the one at the time. They weren' happening at that time everything had slopped fora while, it was tha litle dry season atthe end of ‘99-90 ITWAS STARTING TO GOA BIT COMMERCIAL AT THAT TIME? ‘Yeah, when people started obtaining icenses that’s when it slarled geting commercial cause they were treating it more ike a business. When everyone was just rushing to a party and they were avoiding police and you'd get through X amount of roadblocks and you'd be in there and get the smell ofthe place through your nosis and youd just say, "Yes, we're in here man tis is happening right now. But we wast playing al them times we were just punters and we were out there checking out whats going down. WHAT WAS THE FIRST BIG BREAK THAT GOT YOU ONTO THE SCENE? ‘Amnesia at Skybiue Connection in Coventry in late 89. DO YOU THINK ITS BEEN EASIER AS AN ACT TO FIND THE RISE UP THE LADDER AS OPPOSED TO BEING JUST ADI? | thing the MCing helped us at first cause it gave people something to relate to rather than just music and its just grown from there really. DO YOU GET YOUR WORK THROUGH AN AGENCY? Yes, Maxine Bradshaw at 24-7. DO YOU FIND THAT EASIER THAN DOING IT YOURSELF? Yeah, you get bogged down ands harder getting money trom the promoters. YOU MADE THE ‘LIVIN'IN DARKNESS' TRACK LAST YEAR, WOULD YOU LIKE TO GET INTO THE PRODUCTION ‘SIDE MORE? Yeah, !Nove Duing. | dont want o slop DJing but productions efitely something forthe future. WHAT STYLE OF TUNE DO YOU THINK IS GOING TO BE ABOUT NEXT? ust some dance business, what Kind we don't know yet but | think asa producer, youve got to show people you're not a one music person, you know your music inside out, good music is good music whatever itis. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE MUSIC THAT'S ON THE (STREET AT THE MOMENT? ‘There's some ruff tunes out there, certain labels out there are holding it down. | rate labels like Basement, Reinforced, Moving ‘Shadow, and there's a couple of others, they're the ones who are keeping things at a nice pace. As this music develops further the vocals and that will be used a lot more and it will actually be taken as serious music rather than just an ovemight ‘thing. The music's getting better and better and the people are understanding it more. WHEREABOUTS IN THE COUNTRY DO YOU PREFER PLAYING? ‘Anywhere so long as its tearing. DO YOU THINK THERE'S A BETTER VIBE IN ANY CERTAIN PARTS? There's a good vibe everywhere it just depends on who's puiting onthe promotion and what kind of people they are geting in there. WHAT DO YOU THINK MAKES A GOOD PROMOTER? Honesty isthe main thing, not just pling 5,000 people into a 2,000 venue and they dat give a fuck how anyone's going to get out na fie and people stat dying of heat exhaustion, That happened and we ended up playing for charity forthe geezers brother that ded, we went lhe way to Nottingham on a week night and they just loved us andthe promoter dit do fuck all he just put out tapes and sold them and grassed up the owners of the venue by saying thal they sold excess tickets when it was him, He just wanted to rip ofthe money, he didnt give ashi about anyone's safety, because if there was a fie in there we would have been the last ones out cause it was So packed, even the DJ bit was crammed the place was chocka and all the geezer was thinking about was money, people were Uncomitabl in there. People lke that need to be sloped doing anything else when they are endangering human ives and al that shit WASN'T THERE AN EPISODE OF LONDON'S BURNING’ THAT WAS ABOUT A TOO CRAMMED RAVE? Youve got tobe careful because youve got to realise there's a lot of peoples kids going in there and also they shouldnt be allowed ini they ook underage either. PAGE 6 WHAT PROMOTERS DO YOU THINK ARE DOING A GOOD JOB (AT THE MOMENT? | think the Edge are tying hard, Amnesia, Dance Trance, Obsession. There's loads | cant remember but there's alt of good ones who should keep up the work but the greedy ones should just ease of They‘ the ones that kid it al last year, things were flowing nicely but they commerciaised i all up too much, 30,000 people and all that. Thats some joke business, how can you feel comfortable with all those people around. HAVE YOU EVER PLAYED ABROAD? Yeah, weve played in Canada, and Ausra in Novernber and @ few other places are coming on but nothing solid yet. [axa 219) sr the most upfront vinyl in Essex. Well Canada was alight, they're into dance music as a whole, but cour kind of music appealed to them when we was over there. There was JJ Frost, Elis D, Krome and | think that was i, we were just finging down some tunes and they sad they had never heard so much ofthat kind of music onthe trot. Australia's supposed to be ckin and apparently they bootlegged our tune out there and sold thousands - this is what we hear. WOULD YOU PREFER TO PLAY MORE ABROAD? | would ike to travel and see things but ike it here this is where its happening this isthe best scene in the world and aso the best colour mmisture, People said thai you took the drugs out of raving the people would ight but that's just rubbish people are there because they are friends colour and that dont matter atthe end ofthe day you'e just ther playing the music and people ae there to listen, WHAT PLANS HAVE YOU GOT THIS YEAR?
