FORCE AND PRESSURE: MOTION

Q1. Explain the meaning of the terms rest and motion.

Ans1. Rest: An object is said to be at rest if it does not change its position with time with
respect to its surroundings.

Motion: An object is said to be in motion if the position changes with time with respect
to its surrounding.

Q2. Define speed and average speed.

Ans2. Speed- The distance travelled by an object per unit time is known as speed. Its S.I
unit is m/s. It is a scalar quantity.

SPEED= DISTANCE
TIME

Average speed- The ratio of the total distance travelled to total time taken by the body.

Average Speed= Total distance travelled

 Total time taken

It is a scalar quantity. Its unit is m/s.

Q3. Distinguish between distance and displacement.

Ans3.
DISTANCE DISPLACEMENT

The actual length of path covered by a The shortest distance between the initial
moving body in a certain interval of time. and the final position.

It is a scalar quantity. It is a vector quantity .

It is always positive. It can be both positive and negative.

Distance > Displacement. Displacement < Distance
