Dear Potential Practicum Supervisor,

I am a student in the University of Victoria’s Bachelor of Child and Youth Care (CYC) program
and I am interested in completing a practicum with your organization. I bring a range of
experiences in the field and an ability to work with diverse populations. I have a passion for
working with children, youth, and communities as well a knowledge of the CYC field that I feel
will be valuable for your organization.

My interest in CYC work started with volunteer experience with Scouts Canada. Since the age of
15, I have been volunteered with a local Beaver Colony, leading activities for youth aged five
through seven. In this experience, I helped plan age-appropriate programming that helped the
youth develop outdoor, life, and social skills. In this role, I developed conflict resolution skills
and strong abilities in group facilitation. This experience has prepared for me a CYC practicum
and has helped me gain valuable skills.

I also have experience working with high-risk youth in the foster care system. Since June of
2020, I have been employed by IDM Youth Services, an organization that provides therapeutic
housing to youth in government care. My learning in this role has been extensive. I have
learned how trauma impacts behaviour and how this should impact my practice; further, I have
worked with youth from a range of backgrounds and have developed strong relationships with
them. I have also been trained in non-violent crisis intervention and am tasked with completing
thorough documentation of each shift’s events. This experience has prepared to tackle a range
of situations in the CYC field.

My previous practicum experience took place in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the
summer of 2020, I participated in CYC 210 – Virtual Practicum Pilot Project, an online
alternative to a traditional practicum. Through this experience, I developed skills in self-care,
documentation and intervention, community engagement, and my role as a student in
supervisory relationships. As well, I have a full driver’s license and vehicle, standard First Aid
and am certified in Foodsafe.

I hope to discuss a possible fit for a practicum with your agency through an interview. Thank
