PROPER OPERATIONS

The Dailey® CBC-Thruster is a downhole tool that provides Pump Open Force (POF) to apply hydraulic
Weight on Bit (WOB) during drilling operations. The CBC-Thruster also absorbs weight transfer from the
drill string and keeps the Positive Displacement Motor (PDM) from stalling out.

CBC-THRUSTER PLACEMENT IN STRING

To take full advantage of the POF generated by the CBC-Thruster, it should be run as close to the Bit as
possible. When drilling with a PDM, the CBC-Thruster should go directly above the motor.

The POF is determined by multiplying the differential pressure by the pump open area of the CBC-Thruster. This area
is charted for your convenience. The differential pressure is the sum of the bit pressure drop, motor pressure drop, and
the pressure drop of any other component below the CBC-Thruster. The final WOB produced is equal to the POF less
the frictional drag of the Bottom Hole Assembly (BHA) between the CBC-Thruster and the Bit.

The WOB applied by the CBC-Thruster can be adjusted by varying the flow rate, the bit flow area, and type of PDM
used. The balancing of nozzle size and flow-rates is important in enhancing bit hydraulics. By doubling the bit differ-
ential pressure drop, the POF will double and increase the rate of penetration (ROP) and sliding efficiency.

RUNNING THE CBC-Thruster
When running the CBC-Thruster, the stand-pipe pressure gauge, not the hook load, should be used while drilling.
When the drill string has been lowered to bottom, and drilling has begun, the stand-pipe pressure will increase when the
CBC-Thruster nears its closed position. The CBC-Thruster is fitted with a closed position indicator (Tell Tale) which
causes this sharp pressure increase. When the increase in stand-pipe pressure is noted, the brake should be set to
allow the motor to drill ahead. When the CBC-Thruster reaches its full stroke length, the motor will stop drilling,
creating a noticeable stand-pipe pressure drop due to the reduction of motor torque. The brake is released, and the
operation is repeated. For continuous drilling, the driller should note the time to drill the full stroke length of the CBC-
Thruster, and close the CBC-Thruster before the end of the stroke.

If the CBC-Thruster is run above a retrievable MWD tool, the Tell Tale must be removed prior to operation. The
CBC-Thruster can be easily adjusted by selecting different size Tell Tales needed for a specific flow rate. This feature
insures that the variations in stand-pipe pressure can be noted at the surface. Contact your Dailey Representative for
information on selection of optimum size Tell Tale.

RECOMMENDED PROCEDURE TO CHECK THE CBC-THRUSTER

Each trip out of the hole, wash the mud from the polished mandrel and from inside the bottom connection. Check the
polished mandrel carefully for any sign of corrosion, pitting, or flaking of the plating.

Contact your Dailey representative if you have any questions or if assistance is required concerning the proper opera-
tion of the Dailey CBC-Thruster.
