INTRODUCTION

Young people today are using the internet more than ever. The internet

and more mobile technology are viewed as positive aspects of society.

The internet and mobile technology are the two biggest systems of

communication which play a vital role in our daily lives and

development of identities. However, these technologies are used in

negative way. Cyber bullying is bullying that takes place using

electronic technology to harass others. Cyber Bullying is a serious

problem among teens and it can take many forms. Cyber Bullying can be

very damaging to teens and can have several negative effects.

Rose, as well as our principal Mr. Clowson who gave me the

opportunity to do this wonderful project on the topic Cyber Bullying

which also help me in doing a Lot research and I came to know many

new things.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

This project seeks to examine the causes of Cyber Bullying on the

students of Ocho Rios High School.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

1. What causes someone to Cyber Bully others?

2. How can this issue be resolved?


PROCEDURE

In order to collect data for the research a printed questionnaire is used. A


total of 30 copies were distributed by the researcher. Five students from
each grade 11 form class were given a questionnaire to fill out. An equal
number of male and female surveyed, out of the 30 students, 60% were
female and 40% were male.

Questionnaires were distributed during lunch break. The researcher


distributed the questionnaires for only one day. The questionnaire will
be issued under the under craft 9:20am to 9:50am (lunchtime).
METHOD OF INVESTIGATION

A questionnaire is a set of pre-set questions given to persons who make

a population of study. A questionnaire was created in order to collect

data from respondents.

A total of (15) fifteen were asked which consist of (8) eight close ended

questions and (7) seven open ended questions.

The researcher chose questionnaire since it is a method of data

collection.

my School Based Assessment: Cyber Bullying. The aim of this study is

to gather data to see how cyber bullying affects students within Ocho

Rios High School. This questionnaire only takes up to 3-5mins, you are

required to answer all questions and there is no right or wrong answer.

INTERPRETATION OF DATA

Once the survey has been completed, data was collected.

The open ended questions presented in graphical forms.

Figure1. Seeks to answer the question, “If you have been bullied, do you

think it has adversely affected you”? It has seen that majority of the

respondents fifty nine percent (59%) were adversely affected by cyber

bullying while twenty two percent (22%) were not adversely affected by

bullying .The majority of the sample answer is “yes” due to the fact that

being online harassed online can take a toll in an individual both

emotionally and physically.

bullied.
Figure3. Seeks to develop the question “If you saw or knew another

student was being cyber bullied, would you tell your parents or staff

members?” From the data twenty eight percent (28%) of the respondents

would be very unlikely to tell their parents or staff member, seventeen

percent (17%) of the respondents will be somewhat likely to tell their

parents or staff member, twenty percent (20%) of the respondents will

somewhat unlikely to tell their parents or staff members, thirty five

percent (35%) of the respondents would be very likely to tell their

parents or staff members.

Figure4. Shows the result for the question, “how regular did the bullying

occur?” In the pie chart it is seen that the majority of the respondents

sixty percent (60%) of the respondents were bullied once a week, fifteen

percent (15%) of the sample were bullied twice a week, twenty two

(22%) were bullied three times a week, while three (3%) of the

respondents were bullied more than three times a week. Majority of the

respondents responded that they were cyber bulled once a week.

It seen that seventy five percent (75%) of the respondents were cyber

bullied by websites, fifteen percent (15%) of the respondents were cyber

bullied by pictures and videos and ten percent (10%) of the respondents

were cyber bullied. Majority of the respondents were cyber bullied

through websites which include social media websites (facebook,

Instagram, Twitter, Whatsapp)


CONCLUSION

Upon the completion of this Assessment it is clearly seen that there are

numerous factors which cause individuals to Cyber Bullying others and

the victims can be affected in many ways. It was also shown that there

are many ways in which Cyber Bullying can occur and for a variety of

reasons.
RECOMMENDATIONS

Cyber Bullying is on the rise with the advance and availability of

technology at our finger tips. Hence in order to solve this problem the

researcher has the following recommendations to make:

❖ Develop clear rules to prohibit the use of school technologies to

bully others.

❖ Establish systems for reporting cyber bullying or misuse of

technology.

❖ Provide adequate supervision and monitoring of student use of

technology.
