LEARNING
Explain the idea of derivative on how a derivative can be used to describe the rate of  
OUTCOMES
change of one quantity with respect to another, and how to relate the geometric ideas
(CILO) 1 to the analytic ideas. You should be able to state the definition of derivative and 
compute with it.

2
Articulate the explanation of the process of taking a limit and understand the   
importance of limits to the process of differentiation and be able to compute the
derivative of a simple function directly using the limit.
3
Explain the notion of continuity as related to functions. You should be able to relate an
intuitive notion of continuity to the mathematical definition of continuity.   
4 Compare and contrast the ideas of continuity and differentiability.   
Explain the relationship between the derivative and linear approximation, and  
5 compute the linear approximation to a function at a given point, to use this
approximant to estimate values of the function, and to analyze the error involved in

doing this.

6 Understand the rules of differentiation, implies you should know the derivatives of the   
elementary functions.

7 Explain the relationship between the derivative of a function as a function and the   
notion of the derivative as the slope of the tangent line to a function at a point.

Foster derivatives to explore the behavior of a given function, and understand the  
8 information that the first and second derivatives of a function give you about that
function. This includes locating and classifying its extreme, and graphing the

function.
9
Understand the notion of an implicitly defined function. You should be able to find linear
approximations to implicit functions using “implicit differentiation.”   

FINAL EXAMINATION

COURSE OUTPUT
1. No student shall be allowed to attend class if his name does not appear in the class list.
2. A student shall be considered late if he arrives within 15 minutes late of the official time. Three instances of tardiness are equivalent to one absence.
3. A student shall be marked absent if he reports beyond 15 minutes of the official time. This, however, shall not prevent him/her from attending the class and
participating in class activities except taking a test/examination.
4. A student who incurs absences exceeding 20% of the total number of hours required in a given subject, whether EXCUSED OR UNEXCUSED, shall be
given the mark of Unauthorized Withdrawal (UW).
COURSE POLICIES
5. Approximately 7.2 Absences. Thus, the 8th absences of a student is considered as to have exceeded the allowable absences and shall be marked UW.
6. A student who is given the grade of UW shall not be allowed to attend class and participate in classroom activities.
7. Only fully accomplished Excused Slips submitted to the Instructor within 1 week after the reporting of the absent student shall be considered.
8. A student is responsible for making up any discussion/work missed in case of absence.
9. All signed or checked paper requirements shall be part of the student’s Portfolio. Keep all returned papers protected from moisture or kept from being
thrown away.
