Eliz: Wow! What a clear explanation mom.
Mom: That’s right, Eliz! You also learned how to read sentences and stories with vowel Digraphs.
Eliz: Yes mom. But I have a question. Isn’t when we combined vowels /a/ and /i/ it will sound as long /a/? If we
combined vowels /e/ and /e/ it will sound as long /i/? If we combined vowels /o/ and /o/ it will sound as
long /u/?
Mom: Yes. That’s correct.
Eliz: How about this mom. (pointing at her book) What sound will it produce if we combined vowels /o/ and
/i/? will it sounds like /oy/?
Mom: /o/ an /i/? Hmm. I’m curious too. Let’s listen to your teacher’s explanation.

You see….the first sound is /o/ and it glides to the second letter /i/
Make your lips round then spread the mouth to make the oi/oy sound.

So, what do we mean about diphthongs kids?
FLASH

Vowel Diphthongs
- A vowel sound that occurs in a single syllable.
- A single sound produces when two vowels are paired together.
- A vowel sound in which the tongue changes position to produce the sound of the
second vowel.

Kids, how do we pronounce the oi/oy sound?


Again? Say it 3x. (The teacher will say it too)
Your mouth should change its position when you produce the sound of the second vowel.

How do we pronounce ou/ow?
Kids, lets do it. *The teacher will demonstrate the movement of the mouth and the different
pronunciation of diphthongs OU and OW*
FLASH o + u as in ou. Stick out your lips and make them round to make the (ou) sound as mouse and ground.
Usually we say /ou/ sound in a thick/high tone of voice.
Say it 3x kids. OU OU OU.

While o + w or ow sound is usually saying in a low tone voice.

General Rule of using Vowel Diphthong OU and OW
Nice!
😊  We used o + u, when the ou sound is in the beginning or in the middle of the word such as
ouch and pout.
 We used o + w, when the ow sound is at the ending part of the word like bow. But sometimes
we also used it in the middle of the word like blouse.
