CHAPTER – 4: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

4.1. Study Approach and Design

Research design is the approach for collecting, evaluating, interpreting and reporting data in
thesis work (Creswell et al, 2007). It is framework for planning a given research and answering
the research questions (Shona, 2019). In order to achieve the objective of the study, an
appropriate choice of research design is required to accurately and systematically address the
research problem. The main purpose of the study is to assess the knowledge level and attitude of
medical health students in Menelik II referral hospital concerning Hepatitis B Vaccination, in
which it requires identifying characteristics, frequencies, trends, and categorizing of the
population. Hence a descriptive type research design is used, as it is intended to provide a picture
of a situation, person or event, or to demonstrate how things are related to each other and how
they happen naturally (Blumberg et al, 2005).

The data collection method used in this study is organized in closed-ended questionnaire.
Objective measures and statistical, mathematical, or numerical interpretation of data obtained by
closed-ended questionnaires are emphasized through quantitative methods (Saunders et al, 2009).
Thus this study employs quantitative method research approach.
4.2. Study Area & Period

This study will be conducted between August 01 and September 05, 2021, it will be conducted in
Menelik II Referral Hospital, a public hospital located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It is among the
referral hospitals under the administration of the capital of Addis Ababa. Menelik II Referral
Hospital is a referral and teaching hospital which serves more than 15 million people in its
catchment area.

4.12. Ethical Consideration

During and after the research has been completed, ethical problems should be addressed in every
kind of research study. The study would take ethical issues of data collection and usage into
account, and examine them in a responsible manner. Participants will be notified of the purpose
of the study and the potential effects of their involvement in the research. In general, any
information that might affect their decision to participate in the research will be given to the
participant. Participants should be volunteers and, without being coerced, participate. Test data
will be secured and the respondents' confidentiality will be maintained.
