Spiral staircases should only be used in­
doors. (DIN 18065, Sheet 1.2.4. stipulates
that the tread of spiral staircases must
measure at least 100 mm at a distance of
150 mm from the narrowest part of the
step.) This regulation does not make sense
in the case of spiral staircases. It produces
enormous problems and should be modi­
fied. The walking line of spiral staircases is
arranged at a distance of 35 to 40 cm from
the center of the outer handrail.
