Abstract— A novel ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna with tri-band-notched characteristics is

proposed. Which based on Complementary split ring resonator (CSRR) structure and slots
structure. The antenna is based on circle patch monopole antenna. This paper introduce the
Monopole ultra-wideband antenna etched CSRR structure and return type slot, and by turning
the size of CSRR, it’s easily achieved tri-band-notched characteristics. As the significant compo-
nent of wireless communication system, antenna has especially importance on the whole system,
also for the development of UWB systems, the research of UWB antennas has the extremely vital
sign order to avoid the interference of service that work in the UWB band such as 6.9 ∼ 7.1 GHz
(RADIO and TELEVISION) and 11.9 ∼ 12.3 GHz (Broadcast satellite communication system).
It is necessary to design the UWB antennas with band-notched characteristics. Tri band-notched
function in ultra-wideband is achieved by corrosion a CSRR structure on the circle radiating
patch and embed slot in the feed line. The simulated and measured results indicate that the
presented antenna has good radiation, ultra-wideband characteristics and has nearly omnidirec-
tional radiation on the pass band. Besides, it is mimic in size and manufactured easily, so it can
be applied for ultra-wideband communication. The frequency band of UWB is 3.0 ∼ 16 GHz,
bandwidth is 13 GHz. Between 4.1 ∼ 4.9 GHz 6.8 ∼ 7.1 GHz and 11.9 ∼ 12.3 GHz realize tri-band
notched function.

1. INTRODUCTION
ULTRAWIDEBAND (UWB) communication systems have become an attractive wireless topic
since the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) first approved in 2002 the rules for the uti-
lization of the 3.1–10.6 GHz unlicensed band for commercial UWB communications [1]. The high
demands on such communication systems have stimulated research into many UWB antenna de-
signs. Nonetheless, antenna designs for UWB applications face many challenges including their
impedance matching, radiation stability, compact size, low manufacturing cost and electromag-
netic interference (EMI) problems. The EMI problems are quite serious for UWB systems since
there are several other existing narrowband services which occupy frequency bands within the des-
ignated UWB-band-width. These include Radio and Television; Broadcast satellite communication
system. To mitigate any interference with these coexisting systems, it is necessary to introduce a
UWB antenna that has intrinsic filtering properties at their service frequencies.
There are several methods with which one can achieve a band-notched UWB antenna. The most
popular approach is to embed different shaped slots in the radiating element or in its ground plane.
Examples include U-shaped, H-shaped or C-shaped slots [2–6]. However, most UWB antennas have
been designed with only one or two notched-frequency bands. But in practical application, one or
two notched-frequency bands can’t satisfy actual demand. So design and analysis of tri-band-
notched UWB is becoming more and more significance. The complimentary split ring resonator
(CSRR) was proposed recently to reject more than one of the unwanted frequency bands [7–9].
In this paper, a novel ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna with tri-band-notched characteristics is
proposed. Which based on Complementary split ring resonator (CSRR) structure and defected feed
line structure. The antenna consists of a CSRR structure on radiation patch and a slots on feed
line. The performance of the proposed antenna is investigated by the use of Ansoft high frequency
structure simulator (HFSS).
2. CONFIGURATION OF THE ANTENNA ARRAY
The configuration of the proposed antenna is illustrated in Fig. 1. It can be seen that the proposed
tri-band-notched antenna is comprised of two circles in the surface of the substrate and a slot in
the feed line. The proposed antenna is printed on a FR4 substrate whose permittivity is 2.65 and
its thickness of 1 mm. The proposed antenna is optimized by using HFSS and the slot structure is
descripted in Fig. 1(b). The optimization dimensions are L = 23 mm, w = 2.8 mm, H = 30 mm,
h1 = 9 mm, h2 = 0.9 mm, R = 10 mm, R1 = 4.9 mm, R2 = 4.5 mm, R3 = 3.5 mm, R4 = 2.9 mm,
L1 = 2 mm, L2 = 1 mm, L3 = 4.5 mm, D = 0.2 mm.

3. RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

Here, S-parameters, radiation patterns are investigated by using the HFSS. The S-parameter of
the proposed antenna is shown in Fig. 2 with and without of the CSRR and slot structure. The
HFSS-predicted tri-band notches cover the bands: 4.1–4.9 GHz, 6.9–7.1 GHz and 11.9–12.3 GHz.
As shown in Fig. 2. The antenna gain and radiation efficiency significantly decrease over these
tri-band-notched frequency sets. By using the CSRR and slot structures, the proposed antenna
can highly reduce the interference of service that work in the UWB band such as RADIO and
TELEVISION (6.9 ∼ 7.1 GHz) and Broadcast satellite communication system (11.9 ∼ 12.3 GHz)
application.

4. CONCLUSION
Anovel ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna with tri-band-notched characteristics operating at 3.5 GHz
has been proposed and its performance has been investigated by using HFSS. The tri-band-notched
characteristics is achieved by etch a slot in feed line and CSRR. Tri-band notches cover the bands:
4.1–4.9 GHz, 6.9–7.1 GHz and 11.9–12.3 GHz, has been successfully achieved in comparison with the
antenna without slot and CSRR. The proposed antenna can be used for communication applications.
