1. OVER THE LAST 6 WEEKS I’VE MADE A POINT AND HAD THE GREAT
OPPORTUNITY TO MEET AND GET TO KNOW STAFF AT EVERY LEVEL IN EVERY LARGE
FACILITY (AND IN MOST ADMINISTRATIVE AND UNIFORMED UNITS AND DIVISIONS)
MULTIPLE TIMES EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK ON EVERY TOUR. IT WAS IMPORTANT THAT I
UNDERSTAND THE CONDITIONS OF OUR JAILS AND THE CONDITIONS YOU WORK IN. I ALSO
MET WITH UNION LEADERSHIP FOR UNIFORMED STAFF, PROGRAM STAFF, HEALTH CARE
WORKERS, AND OTHER NON-UNIFORM UNION-REPRESENTED MEMBERS OF SERVICE. I ALSO
MADE SURE TO MEET WITH COMMUNITY GROUPS, INCARCERATED PEOPLE AND THEIR
FAMILIES, SISTER AGENCIES, THE FEDERAL MONITOR, THE BOARD OF CORRECTION, AND
OTHER KEY STAKEHOLDERS.

2. IT WAS AN HONOR TO MEET STAFF WHO BELIEVE DEEPLY IN A MISSION OF


TREATING THEIR COLLEAGUES AND INCARCERATED PEOPLE WITH DECENCY AND RESPECT –
THE WAY WE’D WANT ANY OF OUR LOVED ONES TO BE TREATED IF THEY WORKED HERE OR
WERE INCARCERATED HERE — AND WHO BELIEVE IN IMPROVING PUBLIC SAFETY BY
RETURNING INCARCERATED PEOPLE TO THEIR HOME COMMUNITIES IN BETTER SHAPE THAN
WHEN THEY ARRIVED. I SPOKE WITH STAFF WHO, DESPITE A DEADLY PANDEMIC, CAME TO
WORK EVERY DAY OR WHO, WHEN THEY GOT SICK, RETURNED AS SOON AS THEY RECOVERED
TO DO THEIR DUTY. I OBSERVED DEDICATED, DETERMINED, AND COMMITTED LAW
ENFORCEMENT PROFESSIONALS WHO I’M PROUD TO WORK WITH AND WHO I DEEPLY BELIEVE
CAN HELP RETURN DOC TO ITS LEADERSHIP POSITION AS THE NATION’S BEST, MOST
DECENT, MOST PROFESSIONAL, AND MOST WELL-RESPECTED CORRECTIONS AGENCY IN THE
COUNTRY. I’M PROUD TO BE YOUR COMMISSIONER.

3. THAT’S WHY I’M THRILLED TODAY TO LAUNCH #NEWDAYDOC: A COMPREHENSIVE


POST-PANDEMIC RECOVERY PLAN. #NEWDAYDOC WILL INVOLVE A LASER FOCUS ON
IMPROVING SAFETY FOR STAFF AND INCARCERATED PEOPLE, RETURNING US TO A FULL
AND ENTHUSIASTIC WORKFORCE SPECIALLY TRAINED AND ASSIGNED TO STEADY POSTS, AS
WELL AS ROBUST, IMPROVED AND EXPANDED PROGRAMMING, FAIR DISCIPLINE, GREATER
ACCOUNTABILITY, AND IMPROVED CONDITIONS. IT WILL BE GUIDED BY A VISION,
MISSION, AND STRATEGIC PLAN THAT MAKES SENSE, THAT IS CONSISTENTLY
COMMUNICATED, AND THAT YOU’LL ALL HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE INPUT INTO.
OVER THE NEXT FEW WEEKS AND MONTHS, YOU’LL BE HEARING MORE AND MORE ABOUT
#NEWDAYDOC AND OUR STRATEGIC PLAN BUT FOR NOW, MY EXECUTIVE TEAM AND I HAVE

MAYOR’S OFFICE OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE, THE CITY LAW DEPARTMENT, AND NUMEROUS
