Island-hopping in the South China Sea and Sulu Sea

Take time off to visit some of Malaysia’s beautiful islands

1. Tioman Island
One of the most beautiful islands in the world, Tioman was depicted in the movie ‘South
Pacific’ as ‘Bali Hai’. It is a divers’ heaven as it is is surrounded by numerous white
coral reefs. Access is through either Mersing or Tanjung Gemuk near Kuantan where the
ferries and boats are avilable between April and October only.
2. Sipadan Island
Sipadan Island lies off the east coast of Sabah and is known for its scuba diving sites in
the world. Besides this, snorkelling sites are available all around the island and there are
also the lovely soft white sandy beaches. The jumping-off point to the island is Kota
Kinabalu.
3. Layang-Layang Island
A coral deep-sea atoll, Layang-Layang lies off the coast of Sabah and is a marine
heritage. Known as ‘The Jewel of the Borneo Banks’, it has as many as 13 coral reefs,
which create a beautiful underwater scene that is every mariner’s dream. The island is
serviced only by regular flights from Kota Kinabalu.
4. Redang Island
The largest island off the east coast of Peninsular of Malaysia. It is a popular island resort
which offers snorkelling and diving opportunities. It is one of the nine islands that form a
marine park. Redang is also an important conservation site for sea turtles. Access is from
Merang or Kuala Terengganu on boats while a small airport on the island sees tourists
coming in from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur by Berjaya Air.
5. Perhentian Island
Perhentian means a stop in Bahasa Melayu and it refers to the island being one of the
main stops for traders between Bangkok and other ports down south in the 18th and 19th
centuries. The water around the island is home to a variety of corals, sea turtles, jellyfish,
small sharks and reef fish. Acess is via Kuala Besut jetty.
6. Pemanggil Island
It is said that there are spiritual guardians here and, annually, the head of the village at
Batu Buau leaves an offering of polished rice and a payment of one sen for good tidings.
Guardians aside, it is a quaint island with lots of fresh appeal, untouched by modernity.
Access is through Mersing, Johor.
7. Sibu Island
This island, shaped like a triangular hourglass, forms part of the Seribuat chain of islands
and lies 12 km off the east coast, south of the peninsula. Tanjung Leman, which is two
hours away from Johor Bahru near Mersing, is the pick-up point for boats to Pulau Sibu
and back. Its main town is Kampung Duku and it is solar-powered.
