This document outlines the 10 steps to writing an effective WAC (Written Analysis and Communication) report, which involves analyzing a case using the problem-solving approach. The 10 steps are: 1) introduce the case, 2) identify the problem, 3) identify decision areas, 4) define objectives, 5) develop criteria, 6) generate options, 7) evaluate options, 8) recommend a decision, 9) create an action plan, and 10) develop a contingency plan.

Written analysis and communication (WAC), with its
focus on report writing is based on case analysis. The process that is followed is the problem solving approach, which requires the student to: 1. Provide an introduction to the case or the situation: A brief introduction to the case or the situation stating the case facts needs to be provided. 2. Identify the problem: The gap between the ideal and the real solution needs to be identified. 3. Identify decision areas: Short , medium and long term decision areas need to be identified. 4. Define objectives: The desired situation needs to be defined. The situation can be long term or short term or both. 5. Develop criteria: Yardsticks to ensure the writer is on track. 6. Generate Options: Reduce, Categorize and Rank creative options by relevance and probability of meeting criteria. 7. Evaluate Options: Through critical, logical and consistent thinking. 8. Recommended decision: The recommended decision that is in adequate response to the problem that can be implemented needs to be stated. 9. Action Plan: Action Steps and their consequences, deciding who does that, when, where and how. 10. Contingency Plan: Advance planning in case of something going wrong.
