GEM602 Syllabus

Course Description
The course takes up mathematical modeling as an approach for analyzing and solving
physical problems. It focuses on the methods of abstracting physical problems into
mathematical problems, numerical solution of mathematical problems, and interpretation
of mathematical solutions into terms of physical significance. Numerical techniques for
solving algebraic equations, ordinary and partial differential equations (initial-
value/boundary-value problems) are studied. Use of computing tools (i.e. spreadsheet
software; MSExcel®) in the implementation of some numerical techniques is explored.

Course Outcomes
By the end of the semester, you should be able to:
CO1: formulate a mathematical model from physical engineering problems;
CO2: implement an appropriate numerical technique correctly to solve a mathematical
model involving nonlinear algebraic equation, system of linear equations, or initial-
value/boundary-value problems;
CO3: interpret the physical significance of a solution to an initial/boundary-value
problem that system under study; and
CO4: prepare a completion portfolio that details a model-based analysis on assigned
problems.
