When designing portable or stationary instruments, OEMs are often challenged with meeting aggressive
size, power, and weight limitations, all without sacrificing the remaining elements of system-level performance.
Each subcomponent is therefore pushed to offer improved performance within a smaller footprint.

TB Wood’s has been pouring quality iron since 1857 with a maximum sheave capacity of 107-inch diameter. Experienced application engineers provide
optimum designs to meet specific application requirements. Our integrated foundry and machining center allows us to provide fast response time for
made-to-order products. Superior quality iron provides longer sheave life, resulting in less frequent replacement. Less maintenance & downtime equals
lower total cost of ownership.
All standard TB Wood’s narrow and classical V-belt sheaves are designed to ensure that they are

Each year, the RBR50 receives more nominations than can fit in the annual
list. This year, the final selection reflects more rigorous judging criteria, current
technological and business trends in robotics, and the world, hopefully, emerging
from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since companies of different sizes build robots for widely differing applications,
it is difficult to compare them directly. Add to that regional clusters, universities and
research institutions, and new business models, and it becomes clear the best way
to analyze robotics leadership is to see what categories and industries they fit into.
Notable Winners
An emphasis on innovation led to 27 RBR50 winners being recognized for their
introduction of new products, services and technologies. This included both
hardware and software for autonomous systems. Twenty companies were honored
for application and market innovations, while three were honored for their business
prowess.
No RBR50 winner was more innovative than the NASA Jet Propulsion
Laboratory, which forever changed space exploration with its near-flawless
execution of the Mars 2020 Mission. The organization’s Perseverance Rover landed
on Mars on February 18, 2021, traveling 292.5 million miles from Earth. The fifth

experiments start with
the right pipette motor
For medical lab applications, motor selection is integral to an
electronic pipette’s accuracy and precision.
Laboratory automation has always been a great fit for linear motion.
Within certain laboratory devices, precision is required for moving samples into
position, adding reagents, and withdrawing samples. Advancements in the linear
force and speed capabilities of stepper linear actuators let device manufacturers
increase their throughput with these actuators without sacrificing quality.
Life science researchers rely on pipettes as a dependable means to measure
and dispense liquids to a specific volume. Pipettes are typically the first step
in many lab processes, so they must perform accurately and reliably to ensure
that researchers can successfully reproduce the outcome of their experiments.
Since the pandemic began in 2020, pipettes have become an even more vital
laboratory tool, helping COVID-19 researchers prepare lab samples to detect
pathogens using techniques like real-time PCR (polymerase chain reaction).

Jean Thilmany • Senior Editor Sometimes you don’t need to re-invent the wheel. You could, for
instance, drop the computer-aided design file for an existing wheel
into your lawnmower design. Many companies, particularly those that
create custom parts or manufacturing systems, integrate already-
created CAD parts into an assembly to shave design time.
That’s the idea behind configuration-based design, which allows
users to drop an already-created design file into a part or assembly
for quick customization. With configuration-based design, the CAD
file automatically sizes and fits itself into the assembly.

again. Three companies — 3M, MSA Safety and Dentec Safety Specialists
— recently gained NIOSH approval for elastomeric respirators they
redesigned by either removing the exhalation valve or fitting it with a
new filter and valve to trap the virus inside. HHS plans to buy some of
the redesigned masks.
The proposed fixes may sound easy, but the companies had to
figure out where and how to safely and comfortably channel wearers’
outbreaths without leaving them uncomfortably warm, according to
Nancy Crotti NIOSH.

Maplewood, Minn.–based 3M developed a new exhalation filter and

had been used occasionally in healthcare before the pandemic,

The Series 718 portfolio has been expanded with the compact molded M8 circular
connector. The connector has a new type of 360° EMC shielding, used for the
first time in this environment. This shielding ensures reliable protection against
EMI in even the most challenging environments, making this connector suitable
for sophisticated sensor and machine vision technologies, and conveyor systems,
robotics, and other industrial applications.
The M8 cable connector is among the smaller size and lighter weight offerings,
providing an option for applications with high-performance needs where space is
limited (and will likely decrease even more in the future).

• Degree of protection: IP67
• Lifetime > 100 mating cycles
• Cable: PVC or PUR (length customized per customer requirements)
