vCenter Server 5.5 to 6.

0 Upgrade on Windows with Embedded


Platform Services Controller
 Download the Vcenter server 6.0 installation ISO file from vmware.
 Before upgrading to VMware vCenter Server 6.0, we recommend reviewing the VMware vSphere 6.0
Release Notes and Documentation, Product Interoperability Matrices, and our Hands-on-Labs.

 Also, ensure you have a backup of the vCenter Server Database and vCenter Server Inventory Database,
and that the vCenter Server SSL Certificates have been exported and securely stored. If running on a VM, a
pre-upgrade snapshot is recommended. Refer to the product documentation for more information at
vmware.com/go/docs.
Backup of vCenter Server Database:
 On the source machine open the command prompt in the vCenter Server and change the directory

to vCenter_Server_installation_directory\Infrastructure\Inventory Service\scripts.
Location of database: C:\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\Inventory Service\scripts in windows.
 Run the following command at the prompt to back up the Inventory Service database.
 backup.bat -file backup_file_name
 When the backup operation finishes, the message Backup completed successfully appears.
Restore of vCenter Service Database
 On the destination machine, stop the VirtualCenter service.
 Select Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services.
 Right click vCenter Inventory Service and Select Stop.
 The Status Changes from Started to blank.
 On the Destination machine, open the command prompt in the vCenter server and change the directory to
vCenter Server install location\Infrastructure\Inventory Service\Scripts.
Location of database: C:\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\Inventory Service\scripts in windows.
 Run the following command at the command prompt to restore the Inventory Service database.
 restore -backup backup_file_name
 When the restore operation finishes, the message The Restore completed successfully message appears.

……Continue upgradation.

 Attach the VMware vCenter Server 6.0 installation media (.iso) downloaded from My VMware to the
VM/Host. Double click on the drive or right-click and select (Install or Run Program from your media) to start
the installation process.

 The VMware vCenter Server 6.0 Installer will launch and detect a prior vCenter Server 5.5 installation. The
installer will guide you through the entire upgrade process. Click on [Next]. Note: Upgrades from VMware
vCenter Server 5.0 and higher are supported.
 Review and accept the terms of the license agreement to continue. Click on [Next].

 Provide the administrator password for vCenter Single Sign-On. Optionally, provide different set of
credentials for vCenter Server. Click on [Next].

 The installer will run a pre-upgrade check before proceeding with the upgrade. Monitor the progress of the
pre-upgrade check.
 Accept and/or configure the default ports for VMware vCenter Server 6.0. Some ports are not configurable
and must be made available prior to installation. These include TCP 88, 389, 636, 2012, 2014, 2020 7080,
11711, and 11712. Refer to the product documentation for more information at vmware.com/go/docs. Click
on [Next].

 Select the preferred storage path for the installation and data. By default, product binaries are installed to
C:\Program Files\VMware\ and data is stored in C:\ProgramData\VMware\. A directory for the export of
vCenter Server 5.x data will also be requested. Click on [Next] to continue.
 Verify that you have backed up the vCenter Server and its database. You are now ready to upgrade to
VMware vCenter Server 6.0 with an Embedded Platform Services Controller. Review the settings summary
and click on [Upgrade].

 The installer will begin exporting the configuration of the 5.5 instance. Monitor the export progress.
 The installer will begin to remove the 5.5 instance. Monitor the removal progress.

 The installer will begin to deploy the VMware vCenter Server 6.0 components to the VM/host. Monitor the
installation progress.
 The installer will begin to start the newly installed services on the VM/host. Monitor the initialization
progress.

 The installer will begin importing the configuration from the 5.5 instance export. Monitor the import progress.
 The upgrade to VMware vCenter Server 6.0 with an Embedded Platform Services Controller has completed.
Click on [Launch vSphere Web Client] to login. Note: Following the upgrade, the VMware vCenter Server 6.0
server runs with a 60-day evaluation license. You will need to install your permanent license key following
the upgrade.

 [Login] to the VMware vSphere Web Client.


 Check the version of VMware Web Client and vCenter Server by selecting Help and [About VMware
vSphere].

 Confirm Version 6.0 has been installed. You may continue with applying your VMware vCenter Server
license from My VMware in Administration.
