children can use, and it also has symbols for those
children that have visual impairments. The
communication board has high tech, no tech
symbols and eye gaze boards to help the students
that may need additional support as it pertains to
communication.

Vocabulary development for ELL learners it can be

challenging because the students would be coming
into a setting unaware of the English language,
reading, or even writing skills. For educators using
pre-teach vocabulary, cognates (words in different
languages derived from the same word) and
scaffolding. These three concepts can be beneficial
to ELL students.

Vocabulary knowledge is knowledge; the knowledge of a word

not only implies a definition, but also implies how
that word fits into the world.” We continue to
develop vocabulary throughout our lives. Words are
powerful. Words open possibilities, and of course,
that is what we want for all our students.

Vocabulary development and English go hand in

hand. One cannot function without the other. The
best strategies that coincide with English and
vocabulary development would be defining words
within a context. With this concept one can words
that are easy to understand can aid the growth and
knowledge of words.

Another strategy that was mentioned in the article

was context clues. Context clues is something that
we have learned in week three of our coursework
reading. With context clues students can use
contextual analysis to determine the meaning of a
word in a text. Another strategy mentioned in the
article was semantic mapping. Semantic mapping
allows students an opportunity to increase learning

The Verbal and Visual Word Association graphic

organizer can help students gain new vocabulary
through and visual and personal associations. The
connection with this graphic organizer is that it
aligns with Common Core Standards and the
Maryland and Career Readiness Standards for
Maryland. Within the standards it talks about
making connections with real life experiences.

The Verbal and Visual Word Association has shown

improvement in students that are low achieving and
second language learners in content area classes.
