Laboratory Method of teaching

- Deals with first hand experiences regarding materials or facts obtained from
investigation or experimentation.

Features/Characteristics
1. To promote information acquisition through observation, experimental
solutions to problems guided by reflective thinking and acquisition of skill
in manipulation.
2. Provides students opportunities to conduct or participate in original research.
3. Develops skills in using laboratory equipment and instruments.
4. Enhances higher order thinking skills

MAJOR GOALS OF LABORATORY WORKS:

- Teaching manuals and observational skills relevant to the subject.
- Improving understanding of methods of scientific inquiry.
- Developing problem solving and doing by self skill.

GUIDELINES OF USING:

1. Make use of the power of observation and reasoning.

2. Manipulate learning equipment.
3. Make use of reality to make learning easier and more permanent.
4. Use of scientific attitudes.

TYPES OF LABORATORY METHOD

1. Experimental - aims to train students in problem solving with incidental
acquisition of information and motor skills, emphasis is on discovery,
original procedure, and solution of problems.
2. Demonstration - is a process of presenting or establishing facts or
principles. It is a procedure of doing or performing something in the
presence of others or either as a means of showing them how to do it or
illustrating a principle.

ADVANTAGES
1. students learn by doing and come in contact with raw data or materials in the
teaching learning process.
2. Develops the power of observation and reasoning.
3. Develops scientific attitudes.
4. Gives an understanding of what research is and how to apply the scientific
method of research.
5. Give training in organizing data gathered from real materials and how these
objects are manipulated to attain the objectives.
6. Since students come in contact with real life situations, it can be a
preparation for solving real life problems.

DISADVANTAGES
1. Uneconomical way of learning in time and materials
2. Does give much training in verbal expression and when the time equipment i
used, most of the time, its use become mechanical, i.e., used without much
thinking anymore
The Morrisonian Technique or Unit Method
- It is considered the beginning of different kinds of units and integrative
techniques
- often used in the teaching of:
*Geography
*History
*Economics

Steps in Morrisonian Technique or Unit Method

EXPLORATION
The teachers, through questions, tests or discussions, may discover what
previous knowledge or experience the pupils have about the lesson.

PRESENTATION
*The essential features are presented and important points are emphasized.
* The teacher may use all available devices.
*Sometimes teachers make the mistake of thinking that they should do all
the talking in the presentation step.
*The presentation test may be given through worksheet or board especially
if the unit is long

ASSIMILATION

*The child learns and absorbs what has been presented by the teacher.
*A supervised study.
*A variety of exercises and activities may be initiated during this step.
*On this step, the pupils should be taught:
- how to express answers in their own words
- how to use references
- how to interview people
- how to make use of maps, graphs, almanacs, brochures, etc.

ORGANIZATION
● This step must be done without any reference or other aids.
● The chance for a teacher to teach outlining
● The chance for students to develop logical thinking.

THE RECITATION
● Different from daily recitation.
● It is the liveliest part of the lesson
● The pupils may initiate activities related to the unit lesson
● It may be done written , showing the students mastery of the lesson

ADVANTAGES
- More true to life
- It is done with the use of other traditional methods.
- Because the subject matter is encountered in every step of the unit and
presented as a unified whole, what is taught is learned to the point of
mastery.
- The technique corresponds to the steps in the mastery formula:
1. Pre-test
2. teach
3. Retest
4. Reteach
5. Test

- The Morrisonian steps are not only logical but also psychologically sound.

DISADVANTAGE

● Not all teachers are capable of making long range unit plans that cover a
week or more.
● Teachers may just go through the motions and leave out the essence.
● Method alone does not ensure mastery.
