Whether winter storms produce snow relies (1) __________ on temperature. Snow (2) -
_______ when the atmospheric temperature is at or below freezing (0 degrees Celsius) and
there is a minimum amount of moisture in (3) ________ air. If the ground temperature is at
or below freezing, the snow will reach the ground. However, the snow can still (4) _______
the ground when the ground temperature is above freezing if the conditions are just right. In
b ô n g t u y ể t
this case, snowflakes will begin to melt as they reach this (5) ________ temperature layer;
b a y h ơ i
the melting creates evaporative cooling which cools the air immediately around the

snowflake. This cooling retards melting. As a general rule, though, snow will not form if the
ground (6) ________ is at least 5 degrees Celsius.
While it can be too warm to snow, it cannot be too cold to snow. Snow can occur even
at incredibly low temperatures as (7) _______ as there is some source of moisture and some
way to lift or cool the air. However, it is true that most heavy snowfalls occur when there is
relatively warm air near the ground—typically -9 degrees Celsius or warmer—since warmer

Winter is not considered to be a safe time to drive because it is so difficult to tell the
weather and accidents happen so easily. The fog may make it hard for you to drive over the
top of a hill. There might be ice hidden under the melting snow to send you off the road, or
you might unfortunately be involved in an accident by a car sliding on the icy road towards
you. Below are two important rule for safe driving on icy roads.
Rule Number One: Drive smoothly. Many drivers don’t drive at a safe speed and this
make it difficult for them to control their cars if something bad suddenly happens. Every time
you turn, brake or increase your speed, you should do it gently and slowly as much as
possible. How can you know that it is gently and slowly enough? Imagine that there is a cup
of hot coffee on another front seat, your job is to drive so that it wouldn’t spill.
Rule Number Two: Be careful of what might happen. If you are already driving on an
icy road, then the further you go down the road, the more you have to look. You can check
how long it takes to stop by braking gently. You should know that you might be driving
faster than you think. Prepare to reach your destination much later than usual because of
longer stops when the road condition is bad on a wet snowy day. You will drive safely if you
can control your car all the times.

Last October, I went on holiday to Thailand for two weeks with my girlfriends, Linh.
The holiday began well. We spent two days in Bangkok and saw the Floating Market and the
Royal Palace. But things went wrong when we left Bangkok. I wanted to stay in hostels,
which were basic but clean, but Linh said they were too uncomfortable and so we stayed in
quite expensive hotels. I wanted to experience the local atmosphere but Linh just wanted to
go shopping. I thought I knew Linh very well, but you don’t know a person until you travel
with them. It was awful! We argue about everything.
For our last four days we went to Ko Chang, a beautiful island. It was like being in
paradise. The weather was lovely and the beaches were wonderful, but we just sunbathed
without speaking. We spent our last night back in Bangkok and we went for a drink with
some Australians. They were really friendly and Linh started flirting with one of the boys.
That was the end. When we arrived at Heathrow airport the next day we decided to break up.
I took hundreds of photos, but when I got home I didn’t show them to anyone.
