Using:
https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/energy-skate-park-basics/1.1.0/energy-skate-park-
basics_en.html

Part 1:-
1- Copy the following link : https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/energy-skate-park-
basics/1.1.0/energy-skate-parkbasics_en.html
2- Go to Google Chrome, select (Energy Skate Park: Basics) then click on the “Intro”
graph box.
3- Click on (Quarter skateboard ramp)
4- Show (Bar Graph), (Grid), (Speed), and select the smallest mass (msmall=50 kg)
5- Drag the skater to the top of the track and start the animation
6- To take an accurate data, click on (Slow Motion) then Pause and play step by step .
7- Record the maximum height at the top of the ramp and the speed of the skater at
the bottom of the ramp and then record the results in the data table (Note: the
speedometer scaled by 1m/s with a maximum reading of 20 m/s)
8- Drag the skater upward to the same vertical height (6 m) and release it from rest
“free fall” and then record the final speed before it hits the ground.
9- Calculate the potential energy, kinetic energy and mechanical energy for both
cases; ramp and free fall, then compare the results and write down your conclusion.
10- Change the mass of the skater to large mass (mlarge=100 kg) and repeat the
previous steps then record the results in the data table

Part 2:-

1- Write down your Conclusions from the table 1 and 2:

-Compare the two table the potential and kinetic energy in table number 2
has a bigger value than the potential and kinetic energy in table number 1 even
if these two tables have a same maximum height and final speed it is because
the mass in table number 2 is bigger than the mass of table number. When the
mass is increasing the kinetic and potential energy is also increasing.

2- Does the speed of the skater in the skater in the simulation depend on it’s
mass? If not state why.
-No, because mass does not affect velocity. The sum of all forces that act on
the object causes the acceleration while the mass resists it.

3- Is gravitational force conservative or non-conservative? Why?

- Gravitational force is conservative force since it exists when the work done
by that force on an object is independent of the objects path. Instead, the work
done by a conservative force depends only on the end points of the motion.

4- Does the work done by gravity depend on the path taken? Explain.

-Gravitational force is type of conservative force and all type of conservative
forces depends on the displacement and not on the path traveled by it. It is
because conservative forces have particular direction and not like friction force
whose directions is always opposite to direction of motion. This means that the
work done by gravity does not depend on the path taken.

Conclusion:
- From this particular portion of tha lab activity, we know
that mass does not affect velocity, gravitational force is a
conservative force and the work done by gravity/gravitational
force does not depend on the path taken.
