ME 360 : Summer 2021 : Quiz 1 : 90 minutes

1. The inlet conditions for a nozzle of a steam turbine are 60 bar, 350 ◦ C. The exit
conditions are 10 bar, 0.9 dry. (a) If the steam flow rate is 1000 kg/s, determine
the exit area and exit velocity. (b) Under which conditions is this process possible?
Give a justification for your answer. (7 marks)

2. Consider a Rankine cycle operating with turbine inlet at 150 bar, 540 ◦ C. The
condenser pressure depends on the ambient water available for condensation. At
a certain place, in the summer, the water outside is available at 45 ◦ C, whereas
in the winter, the water is available at 15 ◦ C. The saturation temperature of the
condenser is kept 5 ◦ C higher than the incoming ambient water so that adequate
heat transfer takes place. What is the efficiency of the cycle in summer and in
winter. (7 marks)

3. In a nuclear plant, 300 kg/s of dry saturated steam is supplied to the turbine at
150 bar. During expansion, the steam is removed twice from the turbine, the water
separated in separators, and dry saturated steam fed back into the turbine. The
pressures at which wet steam is taken to the separators are 80 bar, and 20 bar. The
water separated in each separator is discharged into the condenser, which operates
at 40 ◦ C. Determine the power output, and the efficiency of the plant, if the turbine
has an isentropic efficiency of 0.9 (11 marks)
