Klaus is trying to choose where to go on vacation.

His choices are (with probability of

selecting it in parenthesis): A=New Zealand (P=0.4), B= Alaska (P=0.35), C= Bali
(P=0.15) and D= Mauritius (P=0.1). Klaus can only afford one vacation. What is the
probability that he chooses either New Zealand or Bali?

P (A or B) = P (A) + P (B)
P (New Zealand or Bali) = P (New Zealand) + P (Bali)
P (New Zealand or Bali) = 0.4 + 0.15
P (New Zealand or Bali) = 0.55

Carlos plays college soccer. He makes a goal 65% of the time he shoots. Carlos is going
to attempt two goals in a row in the next game. A=the event Carlos is successful on his
first attempt. P(A)=0.65. B= the event Carlos is successful on his second
attempt. P(B)=0.65. What is the probability that he makes both goals?

P (A & B) = P (A) . P (B)

P (Goal in 1st attempt & Goal in 2nd attempt) = P (Goal in 1stattempt) . P (Goal in 2nd attempt)
P (Goal in 1st attempt & Goal in 2nd attempt) = 0.65 x 0.65
P (Goal in 1st attempt & Goal in 2nd attempt) = 0.4225
