COLLEGE PROJECTS
Power Management in Wireless Sensor Networks June 2017 – April
2018
Developed a simple but super effective way to increase the overall lifetime of the Wireless Sensor
Networks.
Wireless Sensor Networks are huge networks of power limited sensing devices called sensors. These
sensors sense and transmit data to the base station for further analysis.
As the battery of these sensors are limited, the overall lifetime of the Wireless Sensor Network is also
limited
Our project thus aimed at increasing the overall lifetime of the network. We did this via a simple idea of
heterogeneity.
The LEACH (Low Energy Adaptive Clustering based Hierarchy) protocol is a homogeneous protocol.
Which basically means that all the sensors have an equal amount of battery life.
We used basic heterogeneity mechanism in the same protocol, wherein we gave some extra battery to 10%
of the sensors in the system.
We tabulated all this in the MATLAB code and calculated that by adding the heterogeneity in the sensor
nodes we doubled the lifetime of the network and thus achieved our goal.
