However, I couldn’t write anything. e. Later on, I arrived in a desolate field. f. Then I found inspiration.
6. Rewrite the following paragraph, conjugating
the underlined verbs in the simple present tense. Then analyze the effect produced by the different verb tenses.
Annabel wanted to participate in the school’s poetry contest. She
thought it would be just as when she participated in the science fair. For her, poetry was just another experiment. However, she wasn’t able to write anything. She read books about meter, rhythm, figures of speech, and Greek rhetoric, but it was useless. The blank page stared at her. She examined the biographies of famous poets to no avail; the blank page laughed at her. Words eluded her. The teacher saw her frustration. The teacher gave her a copy of “Annabel Lee”, by Edgar Allan Poe. Annabel read the first lines. The waves of the sea whispered in her ear. She heard the poet’s distant voice. She embraced his longing words. Annabel answered the call. She didn’t care about contests anymore. Poetry has touched her soul.

Write a short poem in which you describe one. Use at least one figure of speech. 9. Think about an environmental issue in your school or community that you think is newsworthy.
