Annabel wanted to participate in the school’s poetry contest. She

thought it would be just as when she participated in the science fair. For
her, poetry was just another experiment. However, she wasn’t able to
write anything. She read books about meter, rhythm, figures of speech,
and Greek rhetoric, but it was useless. The blank page stared at her. She
examined the biographies of famous poets to no avail; the blank page
laughed at her. Words eluded her. The teacher saw her frustration. The
teacher gave her a copy of “Annabel Lee”, by Edgar Allan Poe. Annabel
read the first lines. The waves of the sea whispered in her ear. She heard
the poet’s distant voice. She embraced his longing words. Annabel
answered the call. She didn’t care about contests anymore. Poetry has
touched her soul.
