Generation Conflicts

Definition:
Since time is ever moving forward and change is inevitable, the values, tastes
and outlook on life are different with each generation. It is this difference that is
called a generation gap.
Causes
Generation gaps are often caused by increased life expectancy, rapid changes
in society as well as its mobility.
Consequences
This often causes a lack of communication and understanding between the two
generations since their view of the world was coloured by how society
functioned during their adolescence.
Fights between teenagers and parents.

CLASHES like these are very common between teens and parents — teens get
angry because they feel that their parents don't respect them and are not giving
them space to do what they like, and parents get angry because they are not used
to not taking control or they disagree with the teens' decisions.

It's easy for feelings to get extremely hurt when there are conflicts like these.
And the more complicated the issues are — like the types of friends you have or
your attitudes about certain actions — the bigger arguments can occur, because
your parents will always be intent on protecting you and keeping you safe, no
matter how old you are.

According to our survey and research, here are 6 frequent reasons for conflicts
between parents and teenagers:

1. Curfews (Of course) 15%

Teen’s parents expect them to be home earlier than they’d like to be.

2. School Grade (No need for explaination) 24%

When their children get bad grades at school, this can become a serious
problem since parents have a tendency to worry about their child's education
and college passing. In addition, low scores prevent them from receiving any
scholarships, leading to parents feeling sad.

6: Too much time on the phone 20%

They worry that their kids are spending way too much time with their noses
buried in their phones. According to a new report, teenagers are spending vast
amounts of their days using screens, with an average of nearly 8 hours, only for
leisure and entertainment. This raises awareness of their children’s health and
sometimes parents concern that this may affect offsprings’ grades at school.

5: Unhealthy diet 3%

2: Dressing 10%

1: Dating 28%

Many parents react punitively to teen relationships like cutting off their kids’
access to phones, and restricting their movement. But this will likely do more
harm than good. In common knowledge, parents tend to worry that dating can
have a negative impact on their studies. However, we suggest that they should
have a respectful conversation upon finding out the adolescent is dating, then
listen to them instead of talking down to them.

The Upside (i guess)

The good news about fighting with your parents is that in many families the
arguing will lessen as parents get more comfortable with the idea that their teen
has a right to certain opinions and an identity that may be different from theirs.
