1. Cells are the basic unit of life. They divide for growth and development of an organism.

There are cells that do not divide, they just grow by enlarging. Some cells divide in a
short period of time and some takes time to undergo cell division. An organism may be a
multicellular (consists of more than one cell) and unicellular (consists of only one cell).

2. Mitosis is a cell division which helps in replacing dead cells, repairing tissues and healing
of wounds. It takes place in a somatic cells or body cells and produces two identical
daughter cells (diploid) that has a complete set of chromosomes (2n) which is similar to
that of the parent cell. Meiosis is another type of cell division that generates sex cells
(gametes). It involves two successive cell division. The parent cell divides into four
daughter cells that each contain half the number of chromosomes (haploid cells).

3. The germ cell or haploid cell contains a single set of chromosomes (23). It refers to the
number of chromosomes in egg or sperm cells. The haploid stage is essential to
maintain a constant number of chromosomes in diploid organisms. The haploid cells
then fuse, resulting in diploid cells with two sets of chromosomes. The somatic or
diploid cells are cells found in the body. They have the complete number of
chromosomes (46). These cells do not cross over and they form after the mitosis.
