EITHER
1. (A) Distiguish between reduced zone, extended zone and periodic zone scheme of representing
energy bands. 8
(B) What are Brillouin Zones ? How are they related to the energy levels of an electron in a
metal ? Draw the Brillouin zones for a two dimensional square lattice of side “a”. 8
OR
(E) Discuss the difference in the nature of magnetic susceptibility of a ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic
substance. 8
(F) Discuss the quantum theory of paramagnetism. 8

2. (A) Discuss the vibrations of diatomic lattice and describe its optical and acoustic modes. 8
(B) Obtain the dispersion relation for elastic waves in a linear monoatomic chain with nearest neighbour
interaction. 8

(E) Derive an expression for the specific heat of solids following the Einstein model. 8
(F) Give an account of thermal conductivity due to electrons. 8

3. (A) Obtain Schrodinger’s time independent wave equation. Solve it for a particle in a cubical box of
side “a”. 8
(B) What are the density of state in metal ? Derive an expression for the density of energy states.
