TYPES OF SOIL

INTERNAL FRICTION
Shear strength is not a unique property of a soil but depends on many factors.

Shear Stresses and Shear Strains
Let us consider the XZ plane & apply a force F that causes the
square to distort into parallelogram. The force F is a shearing force,

Strategy: There are two approaches to solve this problem. You can use either
Mohr’s circle or the appropriate equations. Both approaches will be used here

… Mohr-coulomb Failure Criteria
The interface between the blocks is not
smooth and contains friction.
Under a constant normal stress, the shear
stress is increased from zero to the max. τf ,
forcing the two blocks to slide along their
contact area.
When σn =0, the shear stress has to be
mobilized to a max value of c to make the
sliding possible.

… Mohr-coulomb Failure Criteria
If the friction angle between blocks A and B is ϕ then
for the values of σ >0, τ has to be increased to
overcome the resistance to sliding σ x tan ϕ caused
by friction (Coulomb’s frictional law).

Strategy. You are given the initial stress state. You should first check
whether the initial stress state is below the failure envelope, and then
use the appropriate equations to calculate the excess pore water
pressure and the shear strength at failure.

Direct shear tests on clays
In case of clay, horizontal displacement should be applied at a very
slow rate to allow dissipation of pore water pressure (therefore, one
test would take several days to finish)
