Critical Appreciation of “A Thing of Beauty” by John Keats

Introduction:
This poem is a part of a long poem “Endymion” written by English Romantic poet
John Keats in 1818. It is written in iambic pentameter and heroic couplet form. It
tells us about the concept of beauty given by the poet. It takes us towards the love
story of a Greek myth Endymion and Selene, the goddess of moon.

‫کیٹس نے لکھی تھی۔ یہ‬

‫ اور ہیرک کپلٹ فارم میں لکھی گئی ہے۔ یہ ہمیں شاعر کے‬PENTAMETER IAMBIC
‫خوبصورتی کے تصور کے بارے میں بتاتی ہے۔ یہ ہمیں ایک یونانی داستان چرواہا اینڈیمین اور چاند‬
‫کی دیوی سیلین کی محبت کی کہانی کی طرف لے جاتی ہے۔‬

Summary:
The poem opens with Keats’ concept of beauty. He says that a beautiful thing is a
permanent source of joy for us. None can destroy or decrease the beauty of
beautiful objects; rather, it increases, as the time passes. The poet says that our
lives are full of gloominess, disappointment and worries. But the beauty of objects
of nature like, sun, moon, trees, flowers, streams etc removes gloominess from our
lives. Poet further says that all the lovely tales are also the things of beauty because
these tales are immortal. So he decides to tell us the immortal story of Endymion.
The poet is away from the noise of city. All the objects of nature are around him.
Now he can write more and more verses.

‫یہ نظم کیٹس کے خوبصورتی کے تصور سے شروع ہوتی ہے۔ وہ کہتاہے کہ ایک خوبصورت چیز‬
‫ہمارے لئے خوشی کا مستقل ذریعہ ہوتی ہے۔ کوئی بھی چیز یا انسان خوبصورت اشیاء کی‬
‫خوبصورتی کو تباہ یا کم نہیں کر سکتا بلکہ وقت گزرنے کے ساتھ ساتھ یہ خوبصورتی مزید بڑھتی‬
‫ مایوسیوں اور پرشانیوں سے بھری پڑی ہیں۔لیکن‬،‫جاتی ہے۔ شاعر کہتا ہے کہ ہماری زندگیاں اداسیوں‬
‫ندیاں وغیرہ کی خوبصورتی ہماری زندگیوں سے‬،‫پھول‬،‫درخت‬،‫ چاند‬،‫قدرتی اشیاءجیسا کہ سورج‬
‫اداسی کو ختم کر دیتی ہے۔شاعر مزید کہتا ہے کہ خوبصورت کہانیاں بھی خوبصورت اشیاء ہیں‬
‫کیونکہ یہ کہانیاں الفانی ہیں۔اس لئے وہ اینڈیمین کی الفانی کہانی سنانے کا فیصلہ کرتا ہے۔ شاعر‬
‫شہر کے شور سے دور ہے۔ فطرت کے تمام مظاہر اس کے اردگرد ہیں۔ اب وہ ذیادہ سے ذیادہ شعر‬
‫لکھ سکتا ہے۔‬

Theme of Beauty

Poet is of the view that a beautiful object is always beautiful. It never loses its
beauty with the passage of the time. Life is full of worries, tensions and problems
and a beautiful object always provides joy, happiness and pleasure.

‫شاعر کا خیال ہے کہ ایک خوبصورت شے ہمیشہ خوبصورت ہوتی ہے۔ وہ شے وقت گزرنےکے ساتھ‬

Theme of Hellenism

John Keats had a great interest in Greek art and literature. Most of his poems deal
with Greek myths and Greek objects. This poem also revolves around the story of a
Greek myth, Edymion and Selene, the goddess of moon.

‫جان کیٹس کو یونانی آرٹ اور ادب میں بہت دلچسپی تھی۔ اس کی زیادہ تر نظموں میں یونانی‬

Theme of Nature

Al l the romantic poets wrote about nature. Keats also discusses objects of nature
in his poetry. In this poem he says that all the objects of nature are beautiful and
they can be permanent source of joy in our gloomy days.

‫تمام رومانوی شاعروں نے فطرت کے متعلق لکھا۔ کیٹس بھی اپنی شاعری میں فطرت کے مظاہر کے‬
‫بارے میں بحث کرتا ہے۔ اس نظم میں وہ کہتا ہے کہ فطرت کے تمام مظاہر خوبصورت ہیں اور وہ‬
‫ہمارے اداس دنوں میں لطف کا مستقل ذریعہ بن سکتے ہیں۔‬

Metaphor: bower quiet, wreathing a flowery band

Imagery: flowery band, shady boon, clears rills,

Conclusion

The poem is a master piece of Keats’ idea of beauty. It also speaks of his love,
understanding and passion for Greek Literature. The solution of all the problems,
sadness, and worries is living in nature and praising all the elements of nature.
