a. Sketch the graph of y = x 2 -2x showing intercepts and the turning point clearly.

b. Indicate the area bound by the curve, the x-axis, x = -1 and x = 1 and use the
method of integration to calculate the total area indicated above. (7 marks)

A bucket in the shape of a frustum of a cone of end radii 18 cm and 12 cm and a height of
28 cm is filled to the top with oil. The oil is then poured into a vessel that is spherical
whose radius is 10 cm. find.
a. The volume of oil remaining in the bucket after the sphere is filled up. (5 marks)

An open metal box is made from cutting out a square from each corner of a plate of
length ½ m folding up the sides and joining the cut edges. Find the maximum capacity of
the metal box. (15 marks)

a. The effort “p” required to raise a load “w” is given by P = aW + b, where a and b
are constants. If W = 50, when p = 10 and W = 80 when p = 13, find the values of
‘a’ and ‘b’ and state the law of this machine. (5 marks)
b. In a telegraph pole is erected on level ground.an observer notes that the angle of
elevation from the ground to the top of the pole is 32 o.from a point 15 m nearer
the base of the pole, the angle of elevation is 45o. Calculate the height of the pole.

The following experimental values of x and y are believed to obey the law y = ax 2 + b. by
plotting a suitable graph, determine the approximate values of ‘a’ and ‘b’. Hence state
the law of the graph. (15 marks)
