TASK 5

How many different lexical choices do we have to say someone has

died? Select at least 5 COMMON ones, describe the situations/contexts
in which they would be appropriate and give example sentences for
each.
eg for different lexical choices to invite somebody out somewhere:
‘Would you like to go to the cinema tonight?’ - this is a polite way of
asking somebody out.
‘Do you fancy going to…..?’ - this is an informal term; you would use it
with friends. Etc

Think about the relationship between the speaker and the addressee, as
well as the language context (where and when the expression might be
used).

1 be no more - ‘It is 16 years since he is no more.’ - it is a neutral

expression which could be used both in formal and informal situations to
sound polite. You would use it talking about people you know well or you
like.

2 kick the bucket - ‘Any suggestions on celebrities who will kick the
bucket in 2021?’ - it is an informal expression. You would use it talking to
friends about people you do not know well or you do not like.

3 rest in peace - ‘He was a talented man: may he rest in peace.’ - it is a

formal expression. It could be used when somebody makes a speech. It
is also often written on a gravestone.

4 pass away – ‘She's terribly upset because her father passed away last
week.’ - it is a neutral expression which could be used both in formal
and informal situations to sound polite. You would use it talking about
people you know well or you like.
5 breathe one’s last – ‘His eyes opened for a moment and then he
breathed her last It is a literary expression.’ - you would use it writing a
novel or a poem.
