4B Lesson Worksheet 7.2A (Refer to Book 4B P.7.15)

 Objective: To understand the properties of exponential functions and their graphs.

Exponential Functions
Let x and y be variables and a be a constant, where a > 0 and a ≠ 1.
Then y = ax is called an exponential function with base a.
Properties of Graphs of the Exponential Functions y = ax

1. The graph cuts the y-axis at the point (0 , 1).
2. The graph does not cut the x-axis. It lies above the x-axis. For each value
Common of x, the value of y is greater than 0.

10. The figure shows the graphs of the exponential functions y y = 8x
x x
y = 8 and y = a , where a is an integer. Paul claims that the value y = ax
of a can be 10. Do you agree? Explain your answer.
From the graph, a > 1.
For x > 0, 8x > ax.
x
When x = 1, 8 > a. O
∵ 1<a<8
∴ The value of a cannot be 10.
∴ The claim is disagreed. y
