New Bolts for Charge Air Cooler

1 Background
Due to thermal expansion of Charge Air Cooler during engine operation, placing bolts are exposed to
lateral forces that can cause fatigue breakage on mentioned screws.

2 Application
This bulletin applies to all W38B engines.

3 Detail of the modification

The original bolts are replaced with new ones with a smaller diameter in the non-threaded part in order to
let a bigger gap between hole and bolt. This gap allows relative movement due to thermal expansion of
the CAC parts. In addition, with this shape the bolt is less rigid

It is suggestible to replace O-rings 5.33x142.24 SPN 3553-117 (3 pieces). O-rings need grease SPN 3553.199
to be installed.

For V engines:

SCREW HEX. SOCKET 1560-112 1560-140 8 pieces

Sealant, like Loctite 5910, is needed.

It is suggestible to replace O-rings 4762-001 (8 pieces).

5 Work instructions

Engine must be stopped and HT and LT water has to be drained.

Slack all the bolts that fix the Charge Air Cooler.
Remove the old bolts indicated by the arrows and replace them with the new ones.
First screw by hand all the bolts, then first tight crosswise the bolts on the flange of the CAC to the prescribed
torque and end tightening the bolts indicated by the arrows.

New bolts, both for In-line and V engines, have a tightening torque of 163 Nm, instead of standard torque
of 195 Nm.
