1 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

1.1 Background of Project

Phase-II of Bangalore Metro Rail Project comprises four extensions to the existing lines and two new
lines with a total length of 72.095km and 61 stations, in which 12 are underground. One of the new
line is the 21.25 km (13.20 mi) Gottigere–Nagawara line. The line is mostly underground (13.79 km
or 8.57 mi), but also has a 6.98 km (4.34 mi) elevated and 0.48 km (0.30 mi) at-grade sections. There
are 18 stations on the line, of which 12 are underground and 6 are elevated. This underground section
has been divided into Packages. Package RT-03 has been awarded to L&T construction.

Package RT-03 starts from Chainage 13938.328m to Chainage 16822.521m. This comprises of three
bored underground tunnel, two underground stations namely, Cantonment and Pottery Town stations,
Launching Shaft and Retrieval Shaft.

1.2 Geology

1.2.1 Regional Geology

The geology of Bangalore is represented by 3 billion year old Peninsular Gneissic Complex comprising
dominantly of banded and well foliated granitic gneisses with enclaves of older basic rocks. The
gneissic rocks are intruded by quartz and pegmatite veins and also by dolerite dykes. The whole
ensemble, normally referred to as migmatite complex has been extensively weathered resulting in
existence of hard un-weathered rocks occurring in close proximity of the soft weathered rock and
residual soil.

Figure 1-1 Geological map of Karnataka

The main rock formation in Bangalore area is granitic gneiss. The granitic gneisses are mainly of
migmatitic type, highly banded varying in composition from granite to diorite. The rocks in the
remaining part of the area lie under a mantle of soil and river alluvia of varying thickness. The
prominent granitic gneiss rocks are noticed north-west of Devanahalli in Bangalore north. Hennur,
Doddagubbi Chikkagubbi, Rampura in Bangalore east. These rocks are extensively quarried for
building materials. The rocks show fine to coarse-grained texture and usually grey in colour. These
gneisses and granites are intruded by basic dykes, quartz and pegmatite veins.
Gneissic Granite are mainly biotitic and hornblende granites, occasionally showing the presence of
phenocrysts. They show many time well-defined bands, whereas different coloured minerals showing
separate and distinct parallel disposition. These are noticed near Hennur, Doddagubbi, Rampura in
Bangalore east.
The granite occurs only in small portions of the study basin. These rocks are noticed North-West region
of Chikkaballapura and small patches in and around Bangalore district. They have a definite
physiographic identity from the surrounding gneissic plains Weathering also gives rise fine-to-coarse
sandy soil. The rocks are highly weathered and thickness ranges from 4 to 12 m. The prominent granitic
gneisses are noticed in some parts of Bangalore district.

Red loamy soils exhibit fine texture, found in the gently upper pediplains, which is found in northern,
eastern and southeastern (NW1, NW2, NW3, SEW and EW) watersheds of the study area. These soils
have good water-holding capacity but poor retention. This type of soils is noticed in parts of Bangaluru.
1.2.2 Project Geology

In Bangalore region, major area falls into shallow depth of soils(15-30m) may range from Sandy silt
to very dense Red gravelly Sand loams underlain by the rock strata, Peninsular gneiss and closepet and
granites and Laterite are found in the Bengaluru, Bengaluru rural, Ramangaram, Chikkaballapur and
Kolar districts. The whole of Bangalore district have Red Loamy soils in small extent over granites
and gneisses.

In this package around 57 bore holes data is available, out of which 18 are in the station area and 39
bore holes are available in the stretch of tunnel, in tender documents. These boreholes are drilled at
the location of Cantonment and Shivaji Nagar station. The boreholes shows the different soil layers
mainly consists of Clayey soils, silty sand, clayey sand and clayey silt soil. The brief description of
soil layers present in RT-03 alignment are as below:

a) Clayey soil(CH/CI)- These soils contain an appreciable amount of Clay and Silt showing High to
intermeidate plastic nature or having low plasticity

b)Silty Sand (SM) – These soils contain an appreciable amount of silt showing non plastic nature or
having low plasticity.

c) Sandy silt (MI)- These soils contain an appreciable amount of silt, sand, gravel and clay showing
intermeidate plastic nature or having low plasticity

d) Filled up Soil – The terrain contains the filled up soil with depth of 1.0 to 2.0 m.

1.3 Objective of Geotechnical Investigation

The main objectives of geotechnical Investigation works are:

 To determine depth of various strata of ground up to required depth.

 Establish the characteristics of ground at the site for engineering purposes particularly with

may be permitted to adopt core drilling with NX size Tungsten Carbide (TC) bit. TC bit shall be used
for coring in soft/weathered rock and diamond bits for hard rock (Rock Quality Designation, RQD >
50% or core recovery percentage >75 %). In soft rock maximum length of coring shall be restricted to
1.0m. Coring in rocks can be generally performed using two types of barrel systems.

 Single tube core barrel: Single Tube Core Barrel is a tubular piece manufactured from single
tube alloy steel. Water is constantly in touch with the core thus eroding the core. Core recovery
is lowest in single tube core barrel and is primarily used for core drilling in continuous hard
rock formations or for non core drilling where core recovery is not important.

 Triple tube core barrel: It consists of a stainless steel inner tube split lengthwise. The middle
tube is mounted on an assembly that decouples it from the rotating other tube and isolates the
core from the drilling water. A latching mechanism retains the middle tube in place during
drilling. Outer core barrel is used for the initial cut then the second core barrel is used to cut
the finer size and inner core barrel is used to retain core samples. After the triple tube barrel
has been retrieved from the drill hole the reaming shell, diamond core bit and core lifter case
are removed. Air or water is pumped in the head and the third tube / split tube comes out with
the help of a piston arrangement. The upper half of the split tube is then lifted thus revealing
the core in undisturbed condition. Hence Triple tube corer barrel shall be used for coring.
The Contractor shall ensure that the equipment used for drilling, sampling etc. shall have an adequate
capacity to drill boreholes up to specified depth. The Contractor shall make own arrangements to
deploy all the necessary equipment to the borehole location. The rates quoted shall be inclusive of this
and any extra claims on this account shall not be acceptable. CR and RQD for each sampler are to be
immediately recorded after retrieval of the cores.

Below is the basic information required form exploration in rock:

• Depth or rock strata and its variation over the site;

• Whether isolated boulder or massive rock formation;
• Extent and character of weathered zone;
• Structure of rock – including bedding planes, faults, fissures, solution cavities etc;
• Properties of rock material-strength, geological formation etc;
• Erodibility of rock; and
• Colour of water

During drilling through rock every care shall be taken to notice and record any small change during
drilling. The time required to drill through a certain depth, amount of core recovery, physical condition,
length of pieces of core, joints, colour of water residue, weathering and evidence of disturbance and
other effects shall be carefully noticed and entered in the drilling log. For guidance, IS: 5313 may be
referred to. The data shall be presented in accordance with IS: 4464. The cores shall be stored properly
in accordance with IS: 4078.

After recording the details of cores, great care should be taken in removing the core and the core barrel
and in placing it in the box. Especially care shall be taken that the core is not turned end to end, but
lies in its correct position. After recording the details of cores the drill core and cuttings shall be marked
and preserved carefully in core boxes and the core samples shall be transported to the laboratory for
testing at no additional cost. The cost of core boxes shall be deemed to have been included in the
quoted rates. The contractor shall at his own cost transport the core boxes to the place of storage as
directed L&T.

The Contractor shall label all tubes. The Contractor shall include:
• Job name;
• Boring number;
• Depth interval sampling; and
• Length of sample recovered indelibly on the label.

If the recovery of a thin walled tube sample is less than 300mm in length, a split spoon sample shall
be obtained in hard or non-cohesive ground and piston sampling shall be attempted in soft or very
soft ground.

C. Water samples

Samples of ground water shall be taken from each boring in which water is found, or otherwise as
directed by L&T. Where water has been previously added for boring purposes, the boring shall be
bailed out before sampling until only uncontaminated ground water is present in the boring. The
samples shall be stored in watertight container, which shall be washed out with ground water before
filling. The sample shall be not less than 0.5 litre in volume. In the event that sample contains any
suspended sediment, a larger quantity of sample shall be obtained and allowed for sediment settling.
Clean water shall then be decanted into the storage container. The depth of borehole, the depth of
casing and water level at the time of sampling and the depth from which the sample is obtained shall
be recorded on two labels to be fixed to the samples, using appropriate non-fade waterproof marker
pen.

2.6 Field and Laboratory Testing

2.6.1 General

A program of field and laboratory testing of samples obtained from the drilling operation shall be
undertaken to determine the geotechnical properties of the materials encountered. The nature and
number of field and laboratory tests are discussed below in Table 2.2 and table 2.3
